Biography

Biographyby William Ruhlmann

In the decades following his emergence on the national scene in 1975, Bruce Springsteen proved to be that rarity among popular musicians, an artist who maintained his status as a frontline recording and performing star, consistently selling millions of albums and selling out arenas and stadiums around the world year after year, as well as retaining widespread ... Most "rarity" albums seem to be made up of songs not good enough to make proper albums. Not so this one. The quality is extremely high as might be expected from Springsteen. There are many stand out tracks - Sad Eyes and Brothers Under The Bridge in particular. Most interesting of all is a 1982 version of Born In The USA which better reflects the songs grim lyrics of post Vietnam USA than the more familiar version. This album will not convert anyone who is not already a Springsteen fan but there is plenty to keep the followers happy.

I avoided this album for a long time because I thought it was merely b-sides and cast offs from the main albums but I recently found it at a bargain price and had to indulge. Wow was I wrong! This is so much more than just leftovers, cold turkey. It's more like an alternative greatest hits with songs I never knew but love more than the bigger hits. This album has got a bit of everything - rockers "I wanna be where the bands are", ballads "sad eyes", groovers "the fever", acoustic "born in the usa", 80's keyboard wonders "janey don't you lose heart", sadness "brothers under the bridge", love gone wrong "loose ends", live action "rendezvous", early youthful gem "growin' up". In short it's full of unknown wonders that must be heard!

It is rare for an artists outtakes and demos to rival their recorded work, but in 18 Tracks you have exactly that. This is a great selection of some of the tracks from the main boxset and is fairly representative of what you are likely to expect. It is good album in it's own right and perfect for when you haven't got time for the whole boxset. The last three tracks do not feature on the original set so there is some incentive for die-hard fans to buy this as well, and 'The Promise' is one of my all time Springsteen favourites. Any of these tracks could of featured on an album. There are acoustic demos, full band rave ups and up to date outtakes. Bruce could always write a brilliant song, but these hidden tracks demonstrate just how prolific and constant his ability is. Worth every penny.

This album contains some of the finest Springsteen rarities. A copy of this disc lives in my car and has done for the past 2 years now.

Hearts of stone - brilliant, you just want to join in on harmony vocals with Little Steven.

Pink Cadillac - Just got to bounce along with the groove

Brothers under the bridge - A lament for Vietnam vets. Finest Springsteen writing.

But the real highlight for me is this version of "Fever". there are times when it's late at night and the wife and kids are in bed that I just have to put this on the stereo. Headphones on, glass of amber nectar and drift away into the music. The atmosphere on this track is incredible.

This is the Springsteen I grew up on, far better than recent offerings in my humble opinion.

This is an incredible collection, could have easily been an alternate "Greatest Hits". Spans almost 30 years. Infinitely better than his "critically acclaimed" output of recent years. The Boss is back!

I bought this cd because on 18 Tracks are a few songs which were not on the Track Box edition. For the rest it's Bruce Springsteen so nothing can go go wrong.

And that is exactly what it is. I understand it is a condensed version of the bigger collection and so is probably a disc for all. Don't get me wrong, I really like Bruce - well 70% of it, but this is probably more of a 60% as 3 out of 5 stars will tell you. There are undoubtedly some new (or old) classics on here and I love the inclusion of those penned for Southside, but the Born in the USA style stuff rock and roll numbers are just not my faves. I understand Bruce, his history and the way US music has shaped his career but I prefer it when his routes are more from from soul, jazz and even country. Just me, make of it what you will. Still a bargain though if you pick one up cheaply like me.
