Biography

Biography by Stewart Mason
Favoring a naughty schoolboy look that makes him seem even younger than his already tender years (22 when his first major-label album was released), Scottish artist, producer, and remixer Calvin Harris has a similarly youthful and forward-looking approach to his music. Skipping the usual apprenticeship in the clubs or on indie labels, Harris went from posting his ... Read more in Amazon's Calvin Harris Store

Product Description

Product Description

The Scottish DJ's third album 18 Months features a star studded line-up, with guest vocals from the likes of Rihanna, Kelis, Ne-Yo, Florence Welch, Dizzee Rascal, Ellie Goulding, Tinie Tempah, Ayah and Example, as well as input from DJ /Producers Nicky Romero and Dillon Francis. 18 Months is the follow-up to Harris’ 2009 Number One record Ready For The Weekend.
"Sweet Nothing" is the sixth single from the album so far, with Harris' collaboration with Kelis (Bounce), his solo track "Feel So Close", and collaborations with Rihanna ("We Found Love"), Ne-Yo ("Let’s Go"), and Example ("We’ll Be Coming Back") released prior to the album.

BBC Review

If ever there was an album (greatest hits excepted) that could claim to be a winner before a single copy was sold, it’s this one. Six singles released already, counting Rihanna’s We Found Love: six worldwide hits, any one of which you can hear by just by turning on a radio. That’s better than Thriller. And they’re all in the key of ruthless triumph, where even the flats are sharp. How can it fail?

Well it depends on your expectations. Of the nine songs that aren’t singles already, four are cut from the same cloth as the hits: each one desperately vying to be the tune you most want to be dancing to when the realisation hits that you’re out, the night is young, and everything is brilliant.

It’s a noble undertaking, and one Calvin Harris clearly takes very seriously, no matter who he is working with. So line up, Ellie Goulding, c’mere Tinie Tempah, you want a certified Harris club banger to go? With relish? You’ve come to the right place.

Then there are the makeweights – Green Valley, Mansion, School – the leftover riffs and ideas that never quite got finished off and have clearly been thrown in as some kind of light relief amid all of the breathless urgency. School is the real oddity, a half-hearted and airless stab at G-funk, and a throwback to Calvin’s pre-Olympian past, but at least it’s an attempt to go somewhere else. The other two are just commas, a chance to breathe.

Only on Here 2 China is there a worthy variation on the formula, the sense of a producer stretching out to meet the needs of his vocalist. Dizzee Rascal, who already had his Harris makeover a while back, is the lucky recipient of a total bassquake. No whooshing, no builds, no drops, just a re-energised rapper delighted with the great big dirty fartcake he’s been given to work with.

So yes, it’s a portfolio of win for Calvin, an annual report where the graph is almost all peaks and the troughs are so far down they’re practically invisible. Champagne?

I recently purchased this without reading any reviews and was pleased to see how quickly I have come to love it. I was a bit worried because I have listened to his second CD "Ready for the Weekend" so much and the next one can often be a let down. Calvin Harris' third full album is anything but a let down, for me anyway.

There are quite a number of songs with artists like Kelis, Elie Goulding, Florence Welch, Rihanna etc. I thought perhaps there would be quite a bit of filler, but like the previous album, I find myself constantly listening all the way through instead of clicking past some tracks. And despite all the collaborations with big names, I quite love the pieces on his own. While "Mansion" and "School" aren't high-energy stunners, they work, and in some ways the toned down aspect acts to "clear the air" a bit, so the album has some mildly chill moments.

If I were forced to pick favourite tracks, I might say "Bounce", "Feel So Close", "Here 2 China", "We'll Be Coming Back" and "Thinking About You". But honestly, I love it from start to finish.

This seemed like a bargain at only £1.99 and it was. There are a few songs on here that I recognise but to be honest there is also a lot which I can only describe as "just noise". Maybe I'm getting old but the first track was enough to make me want to switch off and not listen to any more. Thankfully the next one was familiar so I listed to the rest. Play the preview tracks first before you decide whether or not to buy.

Having seen the advert for this on TV I thought it sounded great but...It seems to take an age to actually get into the tracks as his build up is dragged out for eons! Alright album but not the best.

The main CD was great but I found that the Deluxe bonus CD was a disappointment, if I knew that the bonus cd was mixed I would have just the ordinary CD.
