Book Description

28 Sep 2011

How often do you get to the end of another long and frantic day and wonder why so many important things didn't get finished? We've never worked so hard and felt so unproductive and unfulfilled.

18 MINUTES takes this challenge and turns it on its head. Peter Bregman, top HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW columnist and global management consultant, shatters the myth of getting it all done by offering a clear and simple plan for getting the right things done.

He shows how the best way to fight distracting interruptions is to create productive ones ourselves, a practice that can be easily implemented in 18 minutes a day. The result is a simple yet comprehensive approach to managing your life a year, a day, and a moment at a time so that your life moves forward the way you want and at the pace you want.

5.0 out of 5 stars Companion book? 27 April 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
In writing this review, I thought it best to make clear what this book does and doesn't do so that potential purchasers understand what they are buying and what it will do for them. On balance, the book is a welcome addition to the subject of what we spend our time on. The author makes it quite clear, upon reading, that this book will not help you do more things as its main aim and as the author makes clear David Allen is the master of gettings things done. This is more of a philosophical approach to concentrating on what really matters to you (or to your boss). Peter Bregman is both a columnist and a blogger and the book is a series of article-like chapters well woven into four key subject areas. The chapters are really thought provoking and I would certainly be excited every time a new posting was available. He gently leads in with a story about a friend, one of his children or Susan Boyle so that he knows he has picked something we can relate to. He then uses the example to illustrate his point. The book never dictates in a step 1 step 2 this is how you run your life type way and offers practical and relevant advice. It would be particularly relevant to headless chickens. There is nothing revolutionary but it made me analyse how I spend my time versus how I could more productively spend my time. I will certainly step up my use of a timer to focus on my productivity and to reflect on my achievement and use of time. This is a very relevant book for the modern age where people are not "present". We now see couples in restaurants, in seminars and at the cinema for instance who are so engrossed on their smart phones that they might as well be somewhere else with someone else.... Read more ›

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book 10 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback
I liked this book when I read it. I noticed it got down rated by some Amazon seasonal reviewers and could not understand why. It is practical, heartfelt and real. It tells you what you sort of know or should know in a human way and helps you realise that getting things done is really about focus. It's about discipline and honesty to do what matters or admit that it doesn't really matter or that you may lack skills or confidence to do it. I have not read Peter Bregman's column before the book but will try to from now on. I have recommended this book to people on my development programmes and still do, along with my own. What I also like about 18minutes is that it isn't prescriptive but helps you figure things out. For some people, this approach will be hugely threatening but for those ready to do some inner work, 18 Min will deliver results.

5.0 out of 5 stars 18 Minutes 28 May 2012
By Rolf Dobelli TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Business consultant and blogger Peter Bregman writes from an entirely distinctive viewpoint in his self-help book on time management. Some of his delightfully irreverent concepts: Your weaknesses can be your strengths; achieving imperfection is always better than wasting time shooting for perfection; what you ignore doing is as important as what you do; and distractions actually can keep you on track. You will learn a lot from Bregman's idiosyncratic text, which presents his cheeky yet practical ideas with great aplomb and in small, delectable chapters that include many instructive case histories. getAbstract recommends Bregman's book to anyone who wants to get more out of each day and have some fun in the process.

By Robert Morris TOP 100 REVIEWER

I have been following Peter Bregman's HBR blog posts for several years and consider him one of the most thoughtful and most eloquent of commentators on the contemporary business world. You can thus understand my eagerness as I began to read this book.

Others have their own reasons for admiring this book. Here are three of mine. First, Bregman is a diehard pragmatist with an insatiable curiosity to understand what works, what doesn't, and why so he that can then share what he considers most important with those who read his columns and now this book. He suggests (and I agree) that "we steal time from ourselves constantly" because I do every day. He offers practical advice that I began to follow as I proceeded through the narrative. All of his advice makes sense but it will work only if I give it a fighting chance. For example, slow down the pace at which I proceed from one task (completed or not) to another (completed or not). I now sprint for 12-15 minutes, then stop for 3-5 minutes and listen to selections from my favorite classical music from CDs such as "The Only Classical CD You'll Ever Need" and Pachelbel Canon and Other Baroque Hits," selections that have a calming effect. Bregman also suggests starting over in the sense that, if I could, would I commit to [fill in the blank] again? Reconstructing one ill-advised decision helps to avoid making another.

I also appreciate Bregman's heavy emphasis on improving the process by which to ask questions. Only then, when answering them, can priorities be determined, goals and deadlines set, and non-essentials eliminated. For example, what is really important in each domain of my life (i.e. personal, domestic, career, and community)? What must be done within the next hour? What must be done by noon? By day's end? By week's end?
