Not as Useful as You Might Expect

175 ULTIMATE HALLOWEEN SOUND EFFECTS consists of 2 CDs with each "sound effect" running anywhere from about thirty to sixty seconds. The sound quality is quite good and many of the selections are intriguing. Unfortunately, however, the collection isn't as useful as you might expect.
The titles of selections are not necessarily descriptive of the selection. "Wicked Winds" and "Thunderstorm" are quite clear, but most of the selections carry titles like "Why," "Into The Darkness," "Edge of Dark," and "Beyond the Door." The only way to know what they contain is to listen to every one of them. That aside, the selections are less sound effects than they are soundscapes. The typical selection includes several sounds blended together: a storm, for example, will include wind, rain, and thunder--and also mysterious laughter, rattling chains, and creaking doors. This limits the usefulness of the selections, and that usefulness is even further limited by the fact that most selections include bass-line synthesizer effects, the sort of music edge one finds in slasher movies. This gives the entire collection a fairly repetitive quality.
In general, I'd say this double CD is worth the cost to those who are building a sound effects collection, but don't expect too much from it. If you are on the look out for spooky sound effects in isolation, you won't find them here.
