4.0 out of 5 stars brilliant 6 Jan 2010

just got this book through the mail today, and already I know some of the basics in japanese like "pleased to meet you" and "my name is...." my family and friends are shocked at how well i'm doing!
i bought this book, along with a few other things, as i want to speak japanese fluently. obviously i've got along way to go, but i'm getting there.

it comes with 2 cds plus a book and both the cds and the book are incredibly easy to follow.

i've uploaded the cds onto my ipod, so i can practice learning japanese wherever i go! it's brilliant. and the book is fairly small as well. so it's easy to carry around in the handbag!

if like me and you want to learn japanese fluently, i would recommend buying this item along with the following
"Let's Learn Hiragana: First Book of Japanese Writing"
"Let's Learn Karakana"
"Let's Learn Kanji"

& (if you have a nintendo ds) buy the "My Japanese Coach (Nintendo DS)" it's brilliant.

or if you're just visiting japan and only want to learn the basics, then just buy the 15-Minute Japanese. it's everything you need for your travels. it covers the basics like introducing yourself, shopping, accommodation, health, and even has an english-japanese dictionary at the back.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but not a quick fix 5 Oct 2007
This is an excellent, clear, easy to use format that covers the basics. Each day is a double page spread so you can really focus on the objectives and avoid your mind wandering away from the task. However, it does say 15 minutes a day is all it takes: if you're like me and feel you should really learn something before you move on, it will take you a lot longer than 15 minutes a day, especially as most of the vocab exercises say memorise!
However i do recommend it to someone looking for a well-structured, useful course.

1.0 out of 5 stars One to Avoid 2 Feb 2009
If you have had any experience with learning Japanese or intend to study it beyond this book: avoid. It throws sentences at you without any regard for explaining the structure behind them.
If you are familiar with Japanese pronunciation and kana; the romanisation in this book will drive you mad and if you're not familiar with them this book sets you up for a fall.
The pictures are nice and the cover flaps are a nice idea, but overall there a lot better Japanese study guides to buy instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars Japanese 12 Sep 2010
By Camy
I need more than 15 min to memorize the new vocabulary and to repeat what's on CD, but overall it's well structured and has good exercises for beginners.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of time 15 Aug 2013

I'm passionate about languages, fluent in three with some knowledge of five others; hence, I sort of know what to expect when learning a new one. Book and CD are very disappointing. They are not even enough if you wish to go shopping, meeting friends, going to the restaurant, travel, hotels and so on. In fact, I would say that it is all very annoying. No explanations why certain words change in a sentence and the whole program does not follow any constructive kind of teaching. One can get the same - for free, from Google.

2.0 out of 5 stars More like a speaking phrase book 20 Jun 2013

This book is great if you are visiting Japan and would like to know a bit of basics and to help you during your stay. However, unlike the misleading title says, it does not help you to Learn Japanese. As another review said, it doesn't give you any understanding of structure or grammar - just phrases to memorise.
