Product Description

Featuring the next generation AMD Sabine platform and an elegant scheme, the new X53 series offers an expressive combination of technology and style. An elegant look, along with Asus’ extensive quality testing, ensures that the X53 series looks fantastic even during prolonged use, allowing you to do more in complete confidence.

The Asus X53Z delivers an immersive multimedia experience through its high definition LED-backlit panel and Altec Lansing speakers with SRS Premium Sound. The X53Z can also connect to HDMI-compatible TVs, consoles and entertainment systems.

Exclusive dual-sided motherboard design places hot components on the underside and away from users. Combined with heatpipes and vents, palm rests and typing surfaces stay cooler than the body temperature so they're cool even during the longest computing sessions. The intelligent touchpad distinguishes between palm and finger contact to prevent inadvertent cursor movements during typing.

Okay, so I've now owned mine since early August 2012 so almost three months and now time to write my review.

Mine is identical to the one here on Amazon apart from the fact mine 'only' has 4gb of RAM rather than 6gb. 4gb should be more than sufficient, especially as I've recently upgraded to Windows 8 (see edit at bottom).

The case: fair enough build quality and being an Asus, it's probably decently put together. The machine claims to have a cool palm rest and it is indeed cool even though my laptop has now been on for several hours. It's also dead silent. Being made of matt plastic, it's not a fingerprint magnet either though greasy smudges will still always show up. Even though it's brown in colour - a subjective choice - I actually find it quite an attractive machine. EDIT: I swiped the back of my hand across the lid of my laptop last night to remove dust and the silver ASUS logo partially broke up and actually cut my hand. Sharp edges, tut tut, so maybe I'll withdraw those comments about good build quality.

The keyboard: my last few laptops have had full size keyboards however this has a smaller one in order to accommodate the number pad. I must admit I could do without the number pad and would rather have full size keys but unfortunately, these don't seem to be available anymore. Oh well. For what it's worth however, the keyboard does seem well made with almost no flex in the middle.

Inputs: three USB - one of them USB 3.0 - plus an HDMI port. One of the USB ports also doubles as a charging port (you need to enable it in the settings) so it can charge devices even when the laptop is powered off. Very handy.

The screen: being an LED screen, it's almost painfully bright and I prefer the LCD screen of my old Samsung.

I am pleased with this notebook but as a major influence on my buying decision in August was the declared upgrade capability the following may be relevent if anyone else is considering a purchase.
Asus have apparently discontinued this X53Z notebook. This may explain why the notebook doesn't appear in their Windows 8 compatibility list at [...], although other X53 models are listed. As of 01.01.2013 there doesn't seem to be much information on the Internet from people who have tried upgrading this model, so the tempting cheap Windows 8 upgrade offer (with accompanying free Windows Media Center upgrade availability) may have to be taken with a degree of caution. I definitely recommend anyone attempting the upgrade to read the ASUS website first as it details what ASUS notebook software and drivers should be uninstalled (due to incompatibility) prior to any notebook upgrade attempt. Unless someone with direct experience can suggest better I would advise avoiding a direct download install over the top of Windows 8 on the X53Z - better to use the option to save the upgrade download to DVD so you can proceed at leisure once your notebook has been properly prepared. I would strongly advise creating a System Repair Disk under Windows 7, and also a set of image DVDs of your current Windows 7 installation - just so you can step back in case the upgrade is not acceptable. Also note that the F9 ASUS Windows 7 system recovery feature the does not work after a Windows 8 upgrade. Quote: Due to Windows 8 limitation, F9 function key no longer functions. If you would to use the built-in recovery partition to restore to Windows 7, please download and run ASUS recovery utility. It will initiate the Windows 7 recovery process. [...

I bought this laptop just before heading for Singapore on a 9 month project assignment; apart from the speakers this is a fantastic laptop; the power controls let it miser along for 4-5 hours , or put on high power and lasts about 3hrs. I use it for GMAIL SKYPE VPN access to corp network, and also run 3 EVE Online clients, whilst watching a video, it can do all of these at once. The A6-3420M and 6520G graphics is a wonderful combination; fantastic mix of Cpu and Gpu, well balanced. The four 1.5GHZ cores are not for engineering applications; go Intel if you need huge cpu power. But for a great everyday lappy, which is fantastic on graphics, this is cpu/gpu impossible to beat at these prices. Be wary of anything else that starts with A6-34xx or A6-44xx .. they are quite different. It must be the A6-3420M and 6520G. Sound quality on the internal speakers is very poor and is its only weak point. So only get this laptop is you like headphone, earbuds or do what I did, and pay $25 sing dollars (£13) for a super little HP USB pair of speakers; totally transforms this this machine :) and with these speakers, its as good as anything costing many hundreds more. (I paid £299). I've been using it every day 3-4 hours since Dec 14, I am absolutely delighted... Thank you ASUS and AMD for this little rugged treasure :)..
