"We put it in a box marked 'what the doctor said', and we buried it." Simon Sylvester
We are told that a picture speaks a thousand words, and I would argue in the case of '140 Characters' so does a tweet. I have learned that Sylvester began writing his particular contemporary brand of nano fiction as twitter updates, which were then picked up by new publishing company Cargo Crate, and a selection were then made into this fantastic volume. There is a fine art to making deeply thought provoking stories, let alone with limited space and Sylvester achieves this with aplomb.
At times darkly sinister and deeply moving, and others sarcastic, tongue in cheek and laugh out loud funny; in many cases a combination of the above, '140 Characters' is a treat for the senses which can be picked up and put down with ease and re-read over and over. At worst, it will be the most fabulous 'loo book' you will ever own, and the accompanying illustrations are a treat and complement the stories beautifully. The polar opposite of those rambling, pompous books that over-use language and yet never engage the reader or touch on any emotional core. Buy it. You will not regret it.
