5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting, beautiful and unique!!, 24 April 2006
This review is from: 13 Songs (Audio CD)
Julie Feeney's debut album is one of the most unique albums i have heard in a long time, with an amazing voice, and an amazing skill for creating a unique sound. I would parallel her unique quirkiness to that of Laurie Anderson in her hey day with a little more haunting beauty and strange calm within the quirkiness.

She wrote, produced and played all seven of the musical instruments herself. She has just won the Choice Music Prize 2006 for Irish Album of the Year. She also got voted by Hot Press readers as one of the Top 10 Best Irish Female Artists, one of the Top 10 Best Irish debut albums and as one of the Top 10 Most Promising Acts for 2006.

She has supported Rufus Wainwright, Martha Wainwright, Josh Ritter, James Blunt, Teddy Thompson, John Spillane, Architecture In Helsinki, Jim Noir, Tir na nOg and Jerry Fish among others in concert already.

I would really urge you to check out this unique musician who continuously challenges and sends the listener off into another world. Check out especially, 'you wrote the magic', just beautiful!

5.0 out of 5 stars hooks of revelation, 17 Jul 2009
This review is from: 13 Songs (Audio CD)
This is a revelation of an amazing talent let loose with the freedoms that come with a self-produced debut. Julie Feeney wrote the lyrics, composed the melodies and played most of the instruments herself. For her troubles, she won the Choice music award and came up with a great debut album that really belongs in the company of Tapestry, The Kick Inside, Jagged Little Pill, Little Earthquakes, felt Mountain and even Exile in Guyville.

Arrangements are sparse and unconventional, but this gets into your head with charming melodies, thoughtful lyrics, great harmonies and occasional, tasteful use of clever vocal gymnastics (not precision pitch shifting in the Mariah Carey way, but more rhythmically, like the Irish style of Sean Nos. She has produced 3 volumes of CD Roms for teaching music in Irish schools). The songs have great catchy hooks and are easily remembered but more difficult to hum accurately than you'd think.

The songs seem to be autobigraphical, and go through the ups and downs and sidewayses of life and relationships with all the emotions in between. Legend has it that this was recorded in a garage belonging to a member of Def Leppard.

Standout tracks are "Ficticious Richard" (reminiscent of Kate Bush's "The Man With the Child in his Eye" and it has a brilliant video) "Aching" (holding its emotion throughout massively held long notes), "You Broke the Magic" and "Wind out of my Sails" (with an airy, floaty vocal) and "Autopilot" (with its catchy skipping-song harmonies).

Likely to be enjoyed by fans of Goldfrapp, Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Bjork, Imogen Heap, Real World, Stravinsky and Samuel Barber.
