Product Description

Watford Observer, October 5, 2005

The Watford portrayed (has) intrigue that would have local newspaper journalists salivating. There is murder, sex, corruption, cover-ups and more . . . --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Product Description

Rookie detective Greta Pusey was sure conspiracy and corruption was being covered up - something fishy was going on at Watford's Shady Lane cop shop! Her boss said she was suffering from over-imagination. Maybe an overdose of woman's intuition? First a murder, then a nasty accident at the fairground, then missing town council officers... --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Imagery to die for, 13 Feb 2006
By PolarBear (Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Some people try and can't. Other people try and really shouldn't. Inua Ellams does.
This collection is beautiful, simple as.
The pictures he creates comibined with the wordplay and underlying sensibility of the writing yield something that you feel lucky to have read.
Having seen Inua perform several times and been taken away with the imagery I'm delighted at how well his work translates to the page.
Basically it's just damn good. If you like beautiful pictures and gorgeous wordplay then you need this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dastardly deeds!, 24 Aug 2007
This review is from: Watford Under Wood (Paperback)
At first I thought the suspected corruption scandal at both the local Planning Department and the HSE seemed a bit over the top, but considering the horrific examples in "Private Eye" every fortnight, it unfortunately isn't that far-fetched. Thankfully the real Watford (governed by the lovely Dorothy) isn't so afflicted!

I was rather disappointed that so little was made of the Watford setting. If you changed the names of Watford Junction and Watford General Hospital, it could have been anywhere. The only place that stood out was Old Redding, which isn't even Watford. I wanted to know where the ladies went to bingo, where the take-aways were bought, and where the detective went roller-blading.

I hope that the author will give her next novel more of 'a local habitation and a name'. She needs to walk down all the backstreets made grimy by traffic fumes and find out what happens when the notorious ring road grinds to a halt and what times of day it isn't safe to walk in Cassiobury Park.

I look forward to hearing more about Greta and the lovely Ari. What will happen to Jim? Isn't his wife getting suspicious by now? When is the next instalment coming out?
