5.0 out of 5 stars 13 Degrees delivers 13 hits! 10 Jan 2014
By PAUL F SCHMIDT - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
For those of us who love the universe of the Wandering Engineer, this is a must have book. Most of the stories advance or backfill the adventures of several of the lesser characters of the two main series - The Wandering Engineer series and the Jethro sequence.
Those few stories that don't follow these characters help round out the Engineer's universe in general, like what has happened on Kathy's World during the Engineer's adventures or fill holes in the backstory of the main sequence itself.
So what did I particularly like? The Magnum PI story based on the old Plague Planet made me grin and the continuing story of the crew left in charge in Pyrax were particularly memorable. Best of all though was the Yard Dog story from Antigua and the two stories based around a certain young pilot. No I won't say anymore - that would just ruin it for folks.
An what didn't I like? The usual issues around tense occur - Hechtl has an issue with this in most of his books, but dang it, nowadays I don't really care. If anyone can write as prolifically and entertainingly as he does, then I'm going to give him a free pass on this from now on. Writers come in two varieties - story tellers and those that can write `technically' correct literature.
Give me a story teller every time and Hechtl is rapidly becoming one of the best in his field.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good 16 Dec 2013

If you don't mind anthologies this one was pretty good. There were lots of stories in here and I would say more than half are worth reading. As in you'll be excited to figure out what everyone has been doing off screen. The rest are what I would term filler. Read them if you're dying to be in the series but other than that not really anything to get excited about.

So I would say that for a series fan that wants to read more in the universe this is the anthology for you!

4.0 out of 5 stars A pleasing romp through the stars 9 Dec 2013

This was a great book! I like seeing the other characters in this universe, even though, of course, we all want to see John Henry Irons and the Trinity doing their thing. Favorite stories were the Io11 and Yard Dogs, hands down. I'm always interested in the good ship Io and her rather nutty crew. The myriad and sunder of characters in this universe all have interesting stories to tell and it's great to be able to see familiar faces and places.

Keep it up and if the feeling arises, another series like this would be appreciated!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great explanations 26 Mar 2014

I loved the book. It took some of the hanging story lines and added to them and others it ended. I think it was a great companion book to the Jethro and Wandering enginner series of books. Cant wait for the next books
