Biography

Sparks - short biog

The artists who would come to be known for posterity as Sparks commenced inventing their often-copied, seldom-equaled brand of music back around 1970, when pop was young and brash and the Southern California airwaves awash with a contingent of post-British invasion inspirations like The Kinks, Barretts Floyd, and The Seeds. The purchase of countless shiny-sleeved ... Read more in Amazon's Sparks Store

This CD is worth buying simply for the mix of 'Beat The Clock'. This is the version that was released in the UK way back in the summer of 1979 on a limited edition coloured vinyl 12-inch single. This gives Ron the chance to showcase his self-indulgent style with some innovative keyboard arrangements. There is also some excessive use of the catchy drum sequence but I have never sickened of it. Having reached the pinnacle of this collection relatively early, there is not really a lot left to recommend the album. 'Young Girls' is a great song but it does not particularly lend itself to an extended version and the same can be said of 'Cool Places'. I found the new version of 'The No. 1 song in heaven' particularly difficult to fathom. If we could have had one CD which featured the original long versions of 'No.1' and 'Tryouts for the human race' together with this 12-inch version of 'Beat The Clock' and a few other tracks thrown in, it really would be heaven. Unfortunately, you need to buy the album 'The No. 1 in Heaven' (which irritatingly includes the short version of 'Beat The Clock') and this one to get three of the best 12-inch singles of the 1970s added to your CD collection. Overall, this is a disappointing collection, but its worthy of four stars for 'Beat The Clock' alone.

They Might Be Giants 20 Feb. 2000
By Edward Swanson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Sparks has provided some absolutely amazing music over the years, and this collection of "12" mixes" provides a fascinating glimpse of some of the Mael Brothers' substantial talent. This is a far less extensive collection than the awesome Rhino collection released in 1991 ("Profile: The Ultimate Sparks Collection," which contains 40 songs on two CDs). Nevertheless, the brilliance of Sparks comes across - their ability to put just about any subject into intelligent words with a great beat and sound. These geniuses are fun, fun, fun!
