BBC Review

This three-CD set celebrates the alternative side of popular music in the 1980s, covering a trio of broad genres: new wave, goth and indie. The usual suspects are rounded up, and the songs selected are - as the title so accurately conveys - 12" mixes. So the listener gets over seven minutes of Simple Minds' Up on the Catwalk, almost a full 10 minutes of Propaganda's P: Machinery, and lengthy versions of Frankie's Welcome to the Pleasuredome and Talk Talk's Living in Another World.

Iconic offerings rub shoulders with significantly rarer numbers. Kicking off everything is the original 1983 cut of New Order's Blue Monday, still the biggest-selling 12" of all time. Its crystalline beats are as perfectly sharp today as they were almost 30 years ago. Closing the same CD - disc one, with synths dominating proceedings - is the extended remix of Japan's Nightporter, a hardly-heard version of the Catford-born band's 1982 hit. Between these points are fantastic tracks from Soft Cell (Memorabilia), The Lotus Eaters (1983's top 20 single The First Picture of You), and Scritti Politti (another top 20 success, 1984's Absolute).

The goth disc begins with Bauhaus' Bela Lugosi's Dead - the influential Northamptonshire gloom-rockers' debut single of 1979 is showing its age a bit, but remains a nostalgic treasure. Post-punk combo Killing Joke follow with Love Like Blood, which - some 27 years after its original release - is probably still their best-known number. The Sisters of Mercy and Siouxsie and the Banshees are expectedly included, with Lucretia My Reflection and Cities in Dust respectively (the latter being its makers' debut single release in the US), and the 11-track CD two closes with The Cure's Hot Hot Hot!!! - something of a flop for such a successful band, having peaked at 45 in the UK, but a highlight of the band's excellent 1987 LP Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (which reached number six).

Disc three collects tracks by Big Country, Julian Cope, Visage, Yello, Echo & The Bunnymen and Prefab Sprout; each number is a classic of a kind, albeit not always representative of the band's commercial peak. Prefab Sprout's Faron Young, for example, missed the UK top 40 by some distance, even though it does open their fine album of 1985, Steve McQueen. To these ears it's the least essential of this release's discs, but personal taste will obviously determine which one enjoys the most spins. And there's certainly enough variety and quality across these 35 songs to appeal to the widest possible audience.

5.0 out of 5 stars THEIR BEST YET ! 15 Aug 2011
Format:Audio CD
I was lucky enough to have this cd set delivered a couple of days early.

Whatever 'alternative' might mean to you (less mainstream? indie? not Duran Duran?) 12"/80s have again hit the right balance between the 'well known' and 'less well known' tracks, which was a strength of their 12" dance & 12" grooves compilations. There is plenty there for the casual buyer who wants to listen to some classic 1980s tracks from the likes of New Order, Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Soft Cell (Memorabilia, cracking track), and again plenty to keep those who prefer the more obscure tracks from the greatest decade ! Not everyone will have heard of the likes of Anne Clark & Yah Wobble, but there is not a single filler on this compilation.
As it becomes harder & harder to compile a good quality 12" compilation that offers something different, you have to credit the 12"/80s team. We all have our favourite alternative tracks that maybe didn't make it onto this compilation, She Sells Sanctuary for me, but in light of the fact that many such tracks are almost impossible to licence (or far too expensive to do so in the case of the rarer Frankie Goes To Hollywood & Propaganda mixes)they have still managed to unearth some unexpected treasures.
Also good to see some of the lesser, but nevertheless fantastic, hits from the likes of Soft Cell, Julian Cope & The Cure.

Spot on, and I can't wait for 12"/80s alternative volume 2.............

5.0 out of 5 stars The 80s are back...Again!! 15 Aug 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Have to agree with the previous reviewer - this is a killer collection and of huge interest to those of us who remember and bought the singles when they were released. I always tried to buy the 12 inch version of a single, not only because 7 inch singles tended to wear out quicker but because I really felt I was getting great value. The formula was always pretty basic - repeat choruses, loop certain parts of the mix and play around with the vocals. Nothing mindblowing but an alternative to the 3 minute single version. There's some great stuff here - I have to admit to having a preference for CD3 which is categorised as the guitar disc. But that's not to take anything away from discs 1 and 2. Many of the tracks are unfamiliar to me but that makes the package superb value. With getting on for 4 hours music this is the finest foray yet into the era of the extended remix. With a stagnant and predictable music industry obsessed with autotuned pretty boys, girls dressed like slappers and hideous (c)rap music this is a welcome nostalgia trip.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some great versions of great songs. 4 April 2013

This is a great addition to any fan of 80s music, particularly new-wave style tracks. Think Blue Monday in terms of very successful tracks, plus slightly more left-field greats like Furniture.

Not my favourite selection of 12"s compared to all other releases in this series. And what an opening......the ultimate 12" of all time (and one of my all-time favourite songs), New Order's Blue Monday is here in its remastered butchered form, with several of the first beats missing (as on all the post-Substance NO compilations)! To me, this opening destroys the listening experience of the other tracks. The selection can also be commented on (would anyone have filed FGTH under 'alternative' back in the days?). Still, not too many usual suspects here, so definately worth to buy if you're into extended versions.

5.0 out of 5 stars overlook the repetition and you'll appreciate what remains 4 Oct 2011

I'd have to say that this time around, the 12"/80s series has give a bit of thought into bringing more goodies that have never been on CD before. Sure, we have to deal with some stuff that has been available on CD repeatedly, such as Blue Monday by New Order, Love Like Blood by Killing Joke, Bela Lugosi's Dead by Bauhaus, etc. But still, there are plenty of standouts here, including the 12" versions of Lover Speaks, Japan, The Mission, All About Eve, Jesus & Mary Chain, The Fall, Prefab Sprout, and Lloyd Cole, plus many others. Let's hope the series keeps up this trend and comes up with more unique track listings for future volumes that don't simply mirror the dozens of other compilations out there. Track times:

2.0 out of 5 stars Too Little Too Late 26 Aug 2014
By Aparato SuperSonico - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Too Little Too Late: This compilation should have been released 5 or 8 years ago roughly at the same time as the others. Half of the tracks found here you probably have from other compilation CDs if not the originals. of the remaining 50%, there are maybe two or three at most that would have been hard to find, but the rest are just filler, non-hit, obscure and deservedly so B-side forgettable tracks. I happen to own 12"/80 and 12"/80/2 which contain the bulk of what i wanted. Had this CD appeared many years ago, I would have grabbed it, but since they fell asleep at the wheel, I'd recommend it only if you don't have anything and are just beginning to get curious about 80s remixes.

Some of the song titles are not what they are. They are tiltled wrong. All in all it is a great 80s cd.
