5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating live album, 27 April 2004
This review is from: 12:05 (Audio CD)
Pain Of Salvation are surely one of the more original and inventive rockbands of recent years, who rarely let the beauty of their music suffer dueto their innovation and technical skill (as far too many bands so oftendo). This live recording reflects and reinforces both their accomplishedinstrumental cleverness and their sense of musical landscape (for want ofa better word).
These songs will sound amazing live (thoughoccasionally strange) to just about anybody, but to fans of PoS the albumis particularly impressive. Most of the songs are unrecognisable until thevocals kick in, they have been wonderfully adapted for acousticperformance. The four-way harmonies are pretty much perfect throughout, which I found quite amazing, especially when you consider the complexityof the parts which they have to perform simultaneously. 'Ashes' stands outin particular for me because the live version sounds so tender, whereasthe original is harsh and bitter. Of course not all of the songs areequally gorgeous to listen to, and some of the instrumental may grate onsome ears. Such people will be those who do not have prior knowledge ofPoS, and if you are one of these you might do well to check out theirstudio albums first. 'Entropia' and 'Remedy Lane' are probably the mostrewarding to get into.
Five stars for doing what barely any bands would(or could) do with a live performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Getting used to expect the unexpected, 23 Feb 2004
This review is from: 12:05 (Audio CD)
An acoustic live album of a rock band usually (almost always) contains the mellow and convertible songs in acoustic form. 12:5, however, is an extraordinary acoustic album. The melodies of some songs are new, the passages between the songs are excellent and even some lyrics of various songs are new, too. This seems as a new album, a new piece of music, rather than a live album that contains "old stuff." Not only fans of PoS, but also people who is into acoustic stuff will love this album. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Acoustic versions with a radical new angle, 15 Jan 2011
By
TrickeyMickey (Canterbury, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 12:05 (Audio CD)
Here is another excellent example of why you don't need to be into progressive metal to appreciate Pain of Salvation. When it comes to playing live and unplugged, most bands are content to roll out their softer songs whilst playing the acoustic counterparts of their original instruments. Pain of Salvation, however, have completely rearranged a series of heavy metal tracks into superb medleys, incorporating harpsichord, cello and complex four-part vocal harmonies. This produces radical alternatives to the original songs, often in different keys and with totally new atmospheres. The result is surprisingly brilliant and original.
