Basically, the only reason im writing this review is because when i initially bought this (and pretty much the reason 50% of the people even looking at this item right now) i was wondering whether or not this adapter is compatible with the Raspberry Pi, and more specifically whether or not it uses the RTL8818CUS Chipset as detailed in the script written by an r-pi user on the official rpi forums that allows debian to boot with wifi automatically enabled (and therefore no longer requires ethernet for internet access and home network SSH functions).

So heres the answer you are looking specifically for. Yes. it works fine, im using it right now and it also infact does use the RTL8818CUS chipset. At the time of writing the Wheezy build of debian doesnt support the script, but don't worry if you have already upgraded to wheezy, this adapter does infact work on the pi.

First - superb product. Works fine on my PC and my Rasberry Pi.

I bought this dongle after reading Norman Love's review. He is correct; this device does work perfectly with the Rasberry Pi. I am using am Amazon Kindle charger as my power supply; the dongle is plugged directly into the top USB port; there appears to be plenty of juice.

However, it took me a day to get it going...

Amazon does not appear to allow web pages to be listed in reviews so I can only hint at how to solve this puzzle. You are going to have to be prepared to learn how to:

Update apt
Upgrade Debian
Update the Pi firmware (rpi-update)
Read system errors with dmesg
View installed modules with lsmod
Blacklist incorrectly installed drivers
Get the latest version of a driver (Raspberry pi forums MrEngman Thu Jul 05, 2012 9:39 pm)
Install the driver using depmod
Install and learn wifitools
Install and learn usbtools
Install and learn wpa_supplicant (router WPA and WEP encryption)
Understand network interfaces

This is not for the faint hearted; and appears common for all WIFI hardware on the Pi. However on a more positive note, my Pi is now nicely tucked behind the TV in my WIFI bubble with no cables showing (my wife is happy(er)). It was worth it.

Good luck.

This barely even works. On the rare occasion it actually connects to the network, it never gets a speed above 0.05mb/s. The connection drops every fifteen minutes and it takes at least a minute to load even a simple page like google news, and god forbid I want to watch a YouTube video. Even in 240p it takes half an hour to load a two-minute video, it would be useless to even try to watch something in HD.

Seriously, save your money and go for something more expensive. It might actually work.

Amazing little thing, better strength signal than my big old USB dongle, installed in no time on Win XP, my old laptop has a new lease of life. Surprisingly fast considering it is on a slow USB 1 socket, it seems to transmit data faster than a USB memory would on that slow socket. No idea how it can be so small, would highly recommend.

This really is a lovely little device which works very well too. I thought that perhaps due to the price the range would not be so good, but this performs as well as much more expensive equipment .. and it is so small!

When we upgraded to the AirPort Extreme Base Station many of the old (pre 2007) Macbooks weren't compatible with Wireless 'N'. So they lost out on speed.

Then this little device came to our attention so we tried it:

Pros:
1) Works as advertised after you download the Mac driver from Solwise and install it BEFORE you plug in the device into the USB slot.
2) So small you'll quickly forget it's there!

Cons: Really rather minor.
1) Would have liked to have it run from the Airport interface instead of the driver but the app can be placed in the dock and once the network profile is saved, it should link automatically thereafter.
2) Only compatible with the 2.4GHz band so missing out on the higher 5GHz band.

Altogether a nice, simple and cheap upgrade. So you can't really go wrong. We've bought more to fit into the old MacBooks.

My wife was given a second hand Sony Viao where everything worked except for the wifi connection. Given the expense of opening the thing up for inspection I went for the external dongle option and trawlwd through the reviews on Amazon until I found this one. Everything the other reviewers have said is correct - the dongle works beautifully and has been all over Europe with no problems at all. It is easy to install, but there is an error in the instructions but if you install the drivers before plugging in the dongle you should have no problems. This is a gem of a device and small enough not to be obtrusive when in use.
