4.0 out of 5 stars A Lovely book. 3-5 stars depending on taste., 17 May 2000
By A Customer
This book deserves a place on the book shelf of any Martial Arts enthusiast. It may not be the most clear 'idiots guide' to the use of the Wooden Dummy, but it is probably not intended to be. It is a sincere and comprehensive run through of the form as practised by Yip Man/Yip Chun.

To a non-Wing Chun practitioner, the actual form as displayed in the book may be of limited use. The book assumes that the reader has knowledge of the component techniques of the form. By this I mean that a photograph showing a completed Kwun- Sao is of limited use to one who does not know how to do Kwun- Sao. This is not at all a criticism of the book but is intended to assist potential buyers in knowing what the book achieves.

The book also contains a section in which applications of the dummy form on an opponent are demonstrated, and various paragraphs on Yip Man and also a little on Bruce Lee.

It may well be that with the proliferation of Wing Chun organisations, the form may well be taught differently in different schools. That should not detract from the value of this book. There are precious few other books on the dummy form available.

The book has a charming and old fashioned feel about it and is more of an interesting slice of martial arts knowledge than a book to learn the form from and impress your mates. I do recommend the book to those who sometimes just 'like' a book for it's feel and sincerity. To those who want it in order to learn the form, it would be helpful to wing chun practitioners as an aide memoire but less so to the non-practitioner. A book in itself, not a means to an end. This book has a special place on my bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wooden Dummy comments, 6 Mar 2003
This is a well laid out book with a clear understanding of each of the wooden dummy movements. The form is laid out with pictures showing ip man and ip chun demonstrating each technique. Some movements such as tok-sau, jut-sau are not very clear in the pictures but a text description below will help you. In all a very good book, well worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth a buy, 6 Sep 2003
A very good book for the serious wing chun person, this book assumes you are well drilled with the basic's of wing chun, if you are a beginner I would not recommend you start working on the dummy just yet, work on your Siu Lim Tao until you understand your wing chun shapes and there application once you have learnt your Siu Lim Toa correctly then buy yourself a wooden dummy. For the more experience wing chun person you will find this book a great source of reference, the detail in some pictures are not very clear but with your experience you will work it out. The book also takes you through a detailed count of each application and how it is used in a fighting situation, a lot of time went into this book. You may find your particular school of wing chun drills the form differently, I strongly recommend you learn one section at a time then show your master what you have learnt, if your master is happy then move on to the next section, I have seen many students work very hard learning from books only to be told thats not how "we" practise it! Don't wast your time drilling something your not sure about, no book is a replacement for a good teacher.
