Many schools and LEAs have opted to use the CEM Durham entrance tests, rather than the previous GL Assessment. The GL tests usually tested children in maths, English, Verbal and Non-Verbal reasoning. The CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring) tests are designed to be fairer and ‘resistant to prepping.’ In other words, children should have a more level playing field, with tutoring being of less help. However, ironically this has created a new market for workbooks, aimed at preparing children for the CEM tests.

This pack includes two sets of Practice Papers, although there is an interesting disclaimer stating that Past Papers are not available from CEM themselves and that they have used, “feedback on real CEM tests from parents and tutors to identify the topics that come up most often.” In other words, these are the best approximation of the kind of test your child may sit in a school which uses the CEM test, but is not necessarily going to contain the same kind of questions. It is, though, currently the best preparation available. If you are unsure what kind of test the schools you are interested in uses, you should be able to find out from the school website or Open Day – there is also a useful website address on this pack which gives details of 11+ tests in the various areas of the UK.

Both CGP and Bond have begun to publish books and past papers containing the kind of questions used in the CEM tests. This particular pack has two sets of practice tests, with questions in Verbal Reasoning, Comprehension, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning. There is also a useful answer booklet. If you do wish to prepare your child for the new tests, this will provide practice of the kind of tests they might sit and should be used after the workbooks in the various subject areas.

The preface to these tests tells parents that past CEM papers are not available; this is deliberate on the part of CEM/Durham Uni, as supposedly children are not meant to be coached for the 11+. It goes on to say that the tests have been put together using feedback from parents and tutors on real CEM tests to identify topics that most often come up, so this is the best preparation there can be.

There are 2 whole tests in this offering, split into Set A, Papers 1 and 2, and Set B, Papers 1 and 2. There are clear guidance notes so that the tests can be taken under exam/test conditions. A1 covers Comprehension, Numerical and Verbal Reasoning, B1 covers Comprehension, Non-Verbal and Verbal Reasoning, A2 covers Numerical Reasoning, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, and B2 covers the same as A2. So, there are plenty of examples and the answer book doesn't simply give the correct answers, but the reasoning and explanations.

Again, CGP does just what it says on the tin/cover.

This is good way to really prepare a child for the 11+ test, and we tested the kids using exam conditions. We believe that this will best prep them for the real exam. Even if the test is not applicable for your area, its central themes and tenets as supplemental work, can do nothing more than be a positive enforcer. That said it best to ensure you have the correct papers for your school area. While you get two test papers per section, it would have been nice to have had more, but this is a minor problem. Overall a very good resource that will hopefully get the results you are looking for.

This pack contains two full tests for the 11+ covering Verbal Reasoning, Comprehension, Maths and Non-verbal Reasoning. I found this to be an excellent way of giving my child a chance at experiencing what a real 11+ exam would be like and also enable them to become familiar with how they are laid out. An answer book is provided, so you can find out precisely how well your child has done, then go back and tackle the areas where they need more help. Nothing beats a trial run in my opinion, so these tests are an excellent way to become prepared for that very important 11+!

The 11+ in my LEA has changed for 2014, moving from all verbal reasoning to CEM (Durham University) format - which includes questions on verbal reasoning, non- verbal reasoning, English and Maths skills. The format change, combined with the comparatively scant availability of resources marketed specifically for this test has induced panic amongst parents. This set of CGP papers is one of a very small number (at the time of writing) of CEM 11+ targeted resources for parents hoping to help familiarise their child with the style of testing - and as such is a very useful thing. As a basic caveat, anyone looking in to purchasing CEM-style 11+ papers should be aware that there are NO official papers published by the Durham University exam board. The best any publisher is currently able to offer is a series of practice books and papers based on information extrapolated by parents and tutors from children who have previously taken the exam. Responsible publishers acknowledge this issue, not all do.

The pack consists of 2 complete exams (each with 2 test papers to them), making them comparable to the sets of practice papers for other types of 11+ exam when it comes to the overall number of papers provided (most of these include 4 test papers of intended 45-50 minutes' duration, without making any comment as to the eventual exam structure, as this can vary by exam board).

On the face of everything I've seen to date - including CGP papers, Bond papers and First Past the Post books targeted at CEM, this exam structure is one of the most rigorous going.
