Amazon.co.uk Review

The Tenth Kingdom, an epic 10-hour miniseries from the Emmy-winning screenwriter of Gulliver 's Travels, was a ratings failure when broadcast on US television, but on video and DVD, where it can be enjoyed at one's leisure, it has a better chance to cast its magical spell. Kimberly Williams has never been more enchanting than as Virginia, a waitress who still lives with her janitor father (John Larroquette) and yearns for something exciting to happen to her. Her wish comes true when she and her father are transported from New York City into a dimension that, with apologies to Rod Serling, can only be called the "Fairy Tale Zone"; nine kingdoms populated by characters from fairy tales of yore. They team up with a dog who's really a prince--Wendell, grandson of Snow White--changed into canine form by the evil Queen (Dianne Wiest), who plots to usurp Wendell's throne. Father, daughter, and his royal dogness are relentlessly pursued through the nine kingdoms by the Troll King (Ed O'Neill) and his three bumbling and horrible children, and the conflicted Wolf (Scott Cohen), who is allied with the Queen but, with the aid of some Oprah-esque self-help books, tames his inner beast and falls in love with Virginia.

The Tenth Kingdom is also a special effects extravaganza. There is indeed, as one character marvels, "magic to behold". But despite the Hallmark brand name and the presence of a grown-up Snow White (Camryn Manheim) and Cinderella (Ann-Margret), bewitched animals, magic mirrors and trolls, this is not kid's stuff. It can get scary, surprisingly violent and quite intense, just like real fairy tales. --Donald Liebenson, Amazon.com

The 10th Kingdom is a fantastic series, no doubt about that, and it can be recommended to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy story with lots of tongue in cheek humour.

However...regarding this alleged extended version from the Netherlands: It does not contain any additional footage from the series. The running time listed adds on the extras. So if you already have a DVD of The 10th Kingdom, you do not need to buy this one as it will be exactly the same, only with Dutch language packaging and menu.

Hope that helps.

This is a series I first watched aged 15 on Sky 1 and I fell in love with the characters, dialogue and scenery immediately. Since then I've bought this box set and watched it five different times with five different friends and it hasn't failed to enchant any of them (or their boyfriends, who grumble at first but then ASK for it to be put on as the story unfolds more).

It follows Virginia, a young but cynical and disillusioned early-twenties woman. Her dad is a waste of space and quite thick although he means well. And the Wolf. Oooh the wolf. He's a wild-hearted villain at the start but his attraction to Virginia leads him to try and control his nature. The way the characters strengthen each other and bond as they're pushed to their limits is heartbreakingly endearing and the quirky scenery, extras and side plots are extremely funny and well integrated into the story. Anybody who loves fairy tales will be amused by the twists given by them here (there's a frog with the tradition riddle of 'there are two doors, this one will lead to death, but sometimes I lie' riddle solved in a far more contemporary way. The way Wolf treats Virginia's grandma is one of my favourite TV moments EVER).

All in all it has the makings of a timeless classic. There's nobody I've met over a range of ages and occupations who's watched it and disliked it. I know I'll happily be watching it another twenty times or so.

I sat down with my family and began to watch the first episode, immediately I was lost into a fantasy world of fantasy. The actors are brilliant and the story is well thought of, I watched this when I was young and now im older and I still remember it.

The story is about a waitress who finds a dog who was once a prince and she, her father and a wolf go on an adventure to bring the prince back to his human form in time for his ceremony. Of course they get into lots of different adventures on the way and the story makes you feel as though you’re there with them

This is truly a wonderful long film and is great for kids and adults alike, if you’re thinking of buying it, buy it
