I was pointed in the direction of this book by a friend who was sick of my complaining about being poor. Struck by its novelty, I bought it and got to work on some of the suggestions straight away. I have since written three love letters, reconnected with an old friend and cooked a six-course meal (I failed to rise to the full Nine). I am still poor, tragically, but I now have something to keep me amused for the foreseeable future. This book is a lot of fun - definitely worth shelling out for!

Much better than the average self-help book,

This book is brimming with brilliant ideas. It isn't so much about how to save money by getting things done cheaply or for free, as about 'the best things in life', most of which don't cost anything. And although it's basically a serious book which is seriously intended to help people be happier (and more solvent!), Quick has a light, humorous touch that sets it apart from standard self-help fare. He (I think it's a 'he') actually makes you laugh. My favourite two suggestions are probably 'Sketch your relatives' and 'Sit still until you see wildlife emerge': I've tried both, and both were in different ways rewarding. I really recommend this book, even to people who never usually go near 'Mind Body Spirit' or 'Self Help'.

While most books on similar topics might leave you rather depressed and angry at yourself for having once again spent money on a book so utterly mundane that you could have done better yourself, this one leaves you feeling smug because you've finally picked a winner !! You might not be ready to have a go at all suggestions but you keep smiling because you've had an enjoyable read and and because you keep thinking about trying out some.A good stocking filler !!
