Review

Impressively illustrated coffee table tribute to the unit that became known as the 'Band of Brothers' and inspired the acclaimed television drama of that name. Published to mark the 65th Anniversary of the 10st Airborne. --Soldier Magazine

The story of the 101st Airborne in WW II has been told many times. However, when author Mark Bando sets pen to paper, he draws on more than 900 interviews with the soldiers who jumped at Normandy and Market Garden, fought at the Bulge and occupied Hitler's Eagle's Nest. 10st Airborne is another product of the author's lifelong commitment to sorting, organizing, and retelling the paratroopers stories. Illustrated with hundreds of never-before-published personal snapshots and utilizing first-hand accounts, Bando inimatley examines the bold accomplishments of the Division form its training in the United States to the end of World War II. 101st Airborne is the best book available that tells the story of the Screaming Eagles from the perspective of the paratroopers who made the jumps, fought the battles, and suffered the casualties --Military Trader

If, like me, your interest in the Airborne campaigns of WWII was heightened by Band of Brothers, then the books of Mark Bando are a must...and this book is a great place to start.

Covering the formation of the division and its deployment in Europe from D-Day to VE Day, "Screaming Eagles" provides a potted history that leaves you wanting to know more.

Plenty of reference material and photos of weapons and uniforms, and first-hand accounts from the men who were there. I would also recommend Bando's 101st website where theres even more photos and continued debate on controversial issues like the D-Day mis-drops. If you like this one then splash out on his 2 earlier volumes that concentrate on D-Day and the Normandy campaign.

Another must-read in this area is Lloyd Clarke's "Arnhem - Jumping the Rhine".

The Band of Brothers theme taken wider to include the whole of the 101st Airborne. Mark Bando's story telling detail is superb. The personal accounts are poignant and this helps to move it away from being simply another abc guide on Airborne forces. A great selection of pictures also - none of which I've seen before.

I was in awe of the larger-than-life characters depicted in "Band of Brothers"; it's one thing knowing that these guys did what they did, but it's a whole different story to see and read about their exploits through quotations and original photographs. This book draws from many different sources to give a more detailed and vivid view which is missing from many other books on the subject; I particularly liked the photo library of clothing and equipment at the end, with its anectdotal text.

Following the 101st through Normandy, to Holland and then Bastogne, and finally to Germany in Ambrose's original "Band Of Brothers", this book puts even more flesh on the bones and goes a long way towards fulfilling my curiosity.

This is a lot of book for the money. If you are interested in military history, this is a must!

When it comes to knowing it all on Airborne, Mark Bando is your guy.
This book (pictures and stories) is next best to having been there with these remarkable guys.

A very well written book, with a lot of small anecdotes.
