5.0 out of 5 stars An insider's guide to the poetry business - a must read!, 3 Mar 2007
By Dendera (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This really is a must-read book for any would-be published poet. As the book jacket tells us, the author is both an experienced publisher in the UK and international poetry scene and a poet himself, so he knows the poetry world from all the angles. From my own reading -- he really does seem to know the business.

His is a clear-sighted view of just what to expect if you want more than your diary, your mum or your lover to read your work. There are really encouraging statements, such as "Poetry is a multi-million dollar, international business," to very practical ones like "Being published means entering into a partnership with a publisher and commits you to the serious application of your time and talent."

This is not a book about how-to write poetry or how to wander about with rose-tinted glasses on. It is a clear-headed, clear-sighted set of advice on how to think and act like a professional in a business. There's little sentiment and hand-holding, but a whole lot of encouraging and straight-talking advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Straight-talking advice, 4 Jun 2009

(REAL NAME)
Chris Hamilton-Emery is a published poet and writer; he made it, and so might you by reading this book thoroughly and taking on board all the practical help that he provides.
This book is more about the marketing and publishing side of poetry than the art of writing poems; he touches down on the writing a little bit, but only in terms of your image and learning what will/won't sell.
Using humour and straight-forward language, Chris aims to get you geared up for the world of sales. He covers invaluable topics like blurbs and cover design, website promotion, press releases, networking, readings, internships, running workshops and loads more.
Although this book is aimed at people who want to be published 'properly', I'm finding it really useful for the self-publishing process too because self-marketing and promotion are so well covered.
I definitely recommend this book if you're in need of some guidance and encouragement.
