This book is so funny that if you read it during a dull sermon it'll have you rolling about in the aisles. Some of the suggestions are so ridiculous that you will be in stitches imagining them. This book isn't just for church goers but for anyone who needs a good giggle.

This tongue-in-cheek little book contains 101 suggestions to help churchgoers enliven a dull sermon.

The activities are split into seven categories - Higher Learning, Games, Diversions, Musings & Meditations, Fine Art, Church-er-cise and Facts & Figures. There's a good range of suggestions, to suit readers of most denominations. A couple of my favourites are 'Armageddon-outta-here' (a churchified version of buzzword bingo) and 'Marble roll' (although this is possibly not one to try if your church is big on processions).

It's probably best to treat this book as a text to meditate on during the week, rather than reading it during the service! Many of the activities may also be adapted for secular situations, such as lectures, meetings at work or conference talks.

Please note that this review refers to the 1989 paperback edition.

101 Things To Do . . . 8 Oct 2010

A pretty neat book. I use some of the illustrations when I'm preaching a (hopefully not boring) sermon.
Good for a chuckle 16 Oct 2007

I first came across this book in the early '90s while serving as a pastor in North Dakota. At that time, it was released by the (Wittenburg) Door crowd (for those of you who have never heard of it, they're still in business as a religious satire magazine and you can check them out at http://www.wittenburgdoor.com/home.html - but I haven't subscribed for years, now and can't say anything up or down on that). The cartoons don't quite have staying power and some of them are getting a bit dated. They aren't ROFL funny, either, but they're all worth a chuckle. If you've got an imagination that can pair up some of these with your more staid church members, you might even laugh out loud once or twice. I frequently give it to young people who decide to join the church (with instructions to only use these ideas when somebody else is preaching).
