Most of the Spanish proverbs have a similar or sometimes exact equivalent in English. This makes it fun and easier to try to guess the meaning of unknown words by their context. For anyone wishing to improve their reading ability in Spanish this is an entertaining and enjoyable book.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Contains cartoon illustrations to help you remember, short passages giving examples of each one in use and translations if you get stuck. Also see "Folk Wisdom of Mexico".

101 Spanish Proverbs is a fun way to learn Spanish. The Spanish are famous for their frequent use of proverbs in their everyday conversations. This book helps the reader to learn by visually picturing the cartoon that depicts the proverb. The Spanish story underneath then illustrates how the Spanish would use the proverb in their conversation. There are translations at the back of the book to ensure that the reader is fully aware of the meanings of the proverbs and the book is divided into sections that group the proverbs by subject matter.

Brilliant, easy and fun!

The actual content of this book is helpful, but it has a lot of padding. I don't think it's really necessary for an illustration and a full conversational context for each phrase, so I find it hard to believe that 115 pages are needed to explain a mere 101 proverbs. It is a useful book for any spanish speaker or learner to have on their shelf nevertheless.

Intersting presentation, but consider the source. 22 Aug. 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Spanish proverbs are translated to their close equivalents in English and demonstrated in a short dialogue. Cartoon drawings enhance understanding of the saying.
The short dialogue that follows the translation is a real aid in understanding how the phrase is used in day to day conversation.
My only concern is that the casual reader or student may be misled into thinking these proverbs are universal in the Spanish language. Indeed, the forward describes the proverbs as those "most familiar to and most frequently used by native speakers of Spanish."
If these proverbs were collected from many parts of the Hispanic world, it would have been helpful to have included the name of the country on the page with the proverb.
My feeling is that a great majority, if not all of the proverbs, come from Spain. I have heard some of them used by professors who studied in Spain.
I hesitate to recommend it strongly if the reader plans to travel in Mexico, Central or South America.

Very helpful 28 July 2000
By Mariposa - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I found this collection to be very helpful. The Spanish proverb is first translated literally and then into the equivalent English proverb. It is then used within a short story which is apropos. I definitely recommend this entertaining and useful booklet.
