Review

‘This is a sometimes witty…always thought-provoking guide…a portable gathering of wise advice for every readership.’ Time Out

Product Description

An anthology of poems to help you through the battle of the sexes by much-loved poetry TV presenter, Daisy Goodwin.

‘101 Poems to Help You Understand Men (and Women)’ is the ultimate alternative to the friend at the end of the phone. Ditch ‘The Rules’, pop psychology, scented candles, life coaches and aromatherapy. If you want to avoid being a casualty in the battle of the sexes listen to the people who know – the poets who, through the ages, have been there too…

Daisy Goodwin introduces each section of poems with her usual tongue-in-cheek, witty, and serious, linking narratives. With chapters such as ‘How to Make Yourself Irresistible to the Opposite Sex’ (see Margaret Atwood’s ‘Siren Song’: ‘the song that forces men to leap overboard in squadrons…’); ‘Why Doesn’t He Ring, The Bastard?’, ‘Men Have Feelings Too’; ‘My Funny Valentine’; and ‘Forgotten But Not Forgiven’, ‘101 Poems to Help You Understand Men (and Women)’ is truly an essential guide.

No doubt there are many "intellectuals" who would not rush out to buy this collection on the basis that it is populist. All I can say to that is it is their loss.

I found this to be a delightful, heartwarming and at times tongue in cheek look at the dichotomy of the sexes. I can't say that it has given me any greater understanding of men (nothing new there then) however it did give intriguing glimpses of the contorted workings of the male mind.

No matter my mood a dip between the pages never fails to bring a smile to my face. So buy it and enjoy.

For those who dismiss collections such as this on the grounds that they are too populist I can only say, it's your loss.

I love virtually every poem in this book, and have spent many happy hours dipping into it. If I had one criticism to make it is that I want more! The dichotomy of the sexes is dealt with in an even handed way and yes it does actually help to see the way men think differently. I don't know that it helps us to understand but then that would be miraculous. So don't judge a book by its pastel cover and buy this.

I bought it second hand - it was in perfect condition.... I prefer second hand (or pre loved) books. All the books in this series are great - the notes give you a starting point to think from, only downside is that some poems are repeated in other volumes. A wonderful way of finding what sort of poetry you really love and who you want to read more of - or even just to start you reading poetry as it is not too 'high brow'.
