I was so frightened at the whole idea of getting this done and bought three books from Amazon.... some were in very great detail which made me even more scared!!!!!However, this book was an absolute gem,it gives superb information on things you need to prepare around your home before you go into hospital, things you need to have with you in hospital that will be so helpful to have and also this book helped me get my head around the whole thing. I had my op 2 weeks ago and feel so positive about the whole experience. Thank you for this little book, I love the author's sence of humour which is something we should all hold onto no matter what we go through in life. Hope this helps someone.

3.0 out of 5 stars Read the first bit! 11 Oct 2008

This is a sensible book. I unfortunately bought it after the op. Mistake!
Anyone thinking this step should get a copy of this and check out the options. They should also Google their heads off before even thinking of it. Unless they have no choice. Elected hysterectomies are not to be entered into lightly. Tooooo many life changing results. This book might highlight a few without being scary, and help those who need the info, come what may.

4.0 out of 5 stars Will make you smile! 25 Jan 2007
By Ali
Format:Paperback
I bought this 2 weeks before my op. It is not a very long book, but I found it quite useful. Alright, some of the things were obvious but overall, yes, I was glad I bought it. And it is pretty light hearted about what is a very serious topic. A good read.

This book does indeed cover the basics, but I found it too light weight overall with not enough comfort or advice about the 'routine' complications. For example, there is a reference to 'wind' being a post surgical problem, but it doesn't then go on to explain that this is because your gut can take a few days to start moving (literally). It would therefore be a VERY handy hint to avoid foods that ferment in the gut e.g. fruits, refined carbohydrates etc and that also by eating a low residue diet for a few days before, you can reduce the build up of gas. I also suggest avoiding any medicines with codeine in them for pain relief as this is renown for stopping your gut.
Another handy hint is that doing your pelvic floor and pelvic tilt exercises, as you are told to do, promotes circulation to the whole pelvic area both helping with healing and getting your gut back into action! Do them lying on your back for greater comfort.
Best of luck xxx
