Terrific. Very clear and instructive, lots of wonderful ways of doing things. An advanced child could use the book, but best with a helpful adult.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, especially for its price. 11 Jun. 2007

I'm an actor by trade, and recently got to perform with the Rogue Artists Ensemble, a magical group of madmen, in a production based on Neil Gaimon & Dave McKean's graphic novel THE TRAGICAL COMEDY OR COMICAL TRAGEDY of MR. PUNCH in Los Angeles.

To research the role of a Punch and Judy professor, I bought 6 books on puppeting...this hands down gave the most useful information for the least amount of money. Completely unpretentious. Enough detail to get you started to build and work with hand puppets and keep you busy for a year.

If you want a more in depth book, try PUPPETS AND PUPPET THEATRE

by David Currell, another wonderful book, but not one you can breeze through. Combine them on the same bookshelf would be my best suggestion.

5.0 out of 5 stars simple puppetry 29 Mar. 2007

This book is really easy to understand even though it's not pretty. The diagrams are black and white sketches but they're surprisingly understandable. I didn't realize how simple making a puppet could be before reading this book. The book has diagrams, simple instructions and also little plays that go along with the puppets. When my husband and I have time (ha ha - we have a 14 month old) we plan to make some of these.

3.0 out of 5 stars great ideas... 25 Jun. 2008
By inkiepinkie - Published on
the book has some wonderful ideas and some very creative puppets but the instructions can be a little vague at times and sometimes they can be almost non-existant, appearing in the form of a small paragraph with a drawing next to it. I wouldn't recommend it to someone who's just starting out, but to someone who's experianced, it's a real gem. The book contains some wonderful ideas and inspiration, but doesn't provide you with step-by-step instructions. It has great ideas though.

Depending on what you consider as the definition of "beginner". Very basic and doesn't give you any useful tips / info.
Not recommended unless you're really bored and have nothing else to do
