overall its a good material. But when I study a language I like to repeat what the speaker has just said. The recording material doesn't allow me to do so

Good for building colloquial understanding, but hard to follow 11 July 2011

The book comes with a CD, on which the French phrase is spoken, followed by the English translation, the literal meaning of the phrase, an English colloquial equivalent, and finally a short piece of dialogue in which the phrase is used. The book essentially serves as a transcript of the CD, with an index containing full translations of the dialogue sections at the back.

It would have been nice to have more text in the book, perhaps some background story to some of the phrases but I guess the whole point of proverbs is that they're largely self-explanatory.

The CD dialogue is spoken at a normal French speaking pace and is not repeated or paused. You will be spending a lot of time precision rewinding and pausing if you want to practice what you hear.
