Product Description

Product Description

Buddhism has influenced Western thinking like no other Eastern religion, and even people who have no interest in adopting it wholeheartedly acknowledge the wisdom of its philosophical insights. "1001 Pearls of Buddhist Wisdom" covers basic themes of universal relevance - such as the beauty of nature, good and bad karma, the importance of empathy, how to deal with stress and anxiety, how to meditate successfully, how to be happy, and the joy to be found in service to others. Alongside the "pearls" there are "lanterns": lucid explanations of key Buddhist concepts that illuminate Buddhist belief and practice, and enlightening accounts of key moments, such as the Buddha's sermon in the deer park. Full of accessible Eastern wisdom, this book will help you to find the road to inner peace and happiness...and even, perhaps, nirvana.

this lavishly and attractively illustrated collection has a depth and lightness. its a book to take around with you, dip in to and then go back to. the quotations are fasciating, and each section has a succinct introduction which gives a 'grounded' introduction to the many divers areas. The book is deceptively straight forward and can be read on so many levels.

Vignettes of Truth 14 July 2008
This is a great wee book. It sits on my desk at work, and offers up, day in, day out, one thousand and one vignettes of truth and insight. I can read a whole section, and mull it over, or simply pick a single entry to ponder. Many of these "Pearls of Buddhist Wisdom" are actually from non-Buddhist sources, but convey that same essence. I also like the fact that all the quotations are credited with the author, and the dates that the author lived. As a result I have been able to cross reference these writers to source, and find out more.
The book is also in a handy, albeit 'chunky', size, so it's relatively easy to carry about.
I'll end this review with a quote from the book: it's from Proverbs 4:7 - " The beginning of wisdom is this: get wisdom, and whatever else you get, get insight." Highly recommended.

EXCELLENT book, can not praise it enough!!! Honestly think everyone should read this book whether you are buddhist or not!!! Very insightful and so easy to read.
The book is made up of 1001 sentences so you can read as much or as little in one go.
Definitely recommend this book to all!!
