Bought this book just as a bit of a coffee table book really.
Worst thing I could have done. I'm now a fully fledge film buff, spend virtually all my spare wages on dvds and can't stop...why?
Because there are apparently 1001 films that I MUST see before I die, and I don't know when thats gonna be! The book doesn't go into what kind of penalties you might be subject to if you don't see them, but I'm not taking any chances.....I gotta see these films!
There are some pretty contentious entries in here,(Big was the one I shook my head at) but that just makes for some good old discussion between friends. The entries range from the hollywood blockbusters such as Star Wars and Goodfellas through art house classics such as Dancer the dark to such foreign masterpieces like Satyricon and City of God. It is catalogued by year, starting in the 1920's going right the way up to 2005, and is pretty much a defining list. I can only think of 5-10 films that I would add to this book, and have discovered countless classics because of it......At last count I've now seen about 200.....another 800 to go!

Superb reference book, great to flick through time after time with a great variety of films covered from all over the world. For the serious film buff there are some glaring omissions and these do mount up after a while like obvious favorites such as La Haine or Il Postino, The Green Ray, Burnt by the Sun, Soy Cuba, Un Coer en Hiver,Repo Man The passenger,Knife in Water, Rififi to name a few which seems like sacrilege when you have tosh like A Ma Soeur and Goodbye Lenin ! Then again I have been introduced to such great artists like Maya Deren, Gauber Rocha and Miklos Jancso to which I am eternally gratefull. Fully recomended then.
