5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant 22 Mar 2010
By K. Tune VINE™ VOICE

Fantastic book. Read it and learn. Not just the stuff everyone knows about but the grain elevator, the disk brake, paper, ice cream machine, kaleidoscope, the steel plough - everything you use was once an invention.

5.0 out of 5 stars Science Condenced. 25 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
A mass of technical information, some you know, much that you have forgotten you knew in concice , readable doses. A book worthy of any book shelf.

4.0 out of 5 stars perfect for the loo 22 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
I bought this as a Christmas present for my husband who is a reference book junkie, and he found it right up his street. Very good value for money, crammed with all sorts of facts about things you might want to know more about, and, even better, things you previously had no idea might interest you.
The only snag is that visitors are definitely spending longer in our downstairs loo when they pick up the (fairly hefty) volume.

4.0 out of 5 stars 2 Quibbles 1 July 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Only 2 quibbles about this otherwise excellent book.

1. It's written in American English: Rowboat, defense etc.
I'm sure this is becoming common practice these days in science writing, but it would have been nice to know from the product details.

2. The use of BCE and CE instead of BC and AD, without any explanation why.
