Too much focus on hotels 24 July 2011
By Norwegian fan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was looking for a book that was more focused on experiences like nature, activities etc. This book has a llittle bit of that but a lot of the book is focused on hotels etc. Thus I am only medium satisfied.
I agree with Norwegian fan 24 Mar 2012
By Paul Lawrence - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The review by Norwegian fan is spot on. This work concentrates too much on hotels. But not to be churlish, let's look at the good points first and then look at the downsides.

First up this work is certainly a bit of a brick. It's chock full of info on the places covered and chock-a-block with lovely photography that will have your inner travel addict positively salivating. The book is set out by continents and within the continent groups the escapes are clumped together by country. Useful indexes help the reader and there is a preface by Catherine Fairweather.

As to the bad? Well, most of the time an 'escape' seems to be defined in this work as a beautiful resort or hotel. Take ....(picks a country at random).... Vietnam. Of the five 'escapes' in this work four of them are resorts. Take ... (flips the pages again).....Ireland and Northern Ireland which are represented by ten entries. Depending on how you count them there are seven or eight resorts/hotels/castle/yoga stays in the mix. Get the picture now?

This book seems to be one of those that are perpetually for sale in discount book stores or in bargain bins at shopping centres so it's unlikely you'll feel ripped off by the purchase. But beware of what your getting.

1001 Escapes 11 May 2010
By BlogOnBooks - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Now that we are well into spring time in the Northern Hemisphere, people are beginning to think about travel plans for summer. We therefore thought it would be a good time to take a look at two new editions that could result in skipping the usual and routine destinations in favor of what could well be viewed as a trip of a lifetime. Both are from Barrons and are part of the `1001' series of books that often serve as completist's bibles for many adventuresome readers.

The first, `1001 Escapes To Experience Before You Die' (edited by Helen Arnold) details the sights and sounds of many high-end luxury accommodations dotting the planet. From the world's most opulent hotel, the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, to the must see Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles, (a place so remote that you have to be lucky enough to be granted permission just to visit for the day!) this volume presents a rich traveler's bounty of the best and most unusual places, hotels, spas, natural retreats and wondrous locations the world has to offer. Unless you are in the travel business (and even then, one who gets to go everywhere for their job!) it's hard to imagine that any one person could possibly visit all these places in one lifetime, which is probably the reason that it takes a number of reporters (reviewers? correspondents?) to actually cover the earth for this volume.
