Product Description

Product Description

For all chess-players, from beginners to world champions, from kids to seniors, delivering checkmate is the greatest thrill the game has to offer. The ability to spot checkmates is a vital skill - and this easy-to-use book shows you how it is done. With the help of Grandmaster John Nunn, you will be ready to shock your next opponent with a deadly checkmate, whether in a school match, a club tournament - or even a championship game!

By focusing exclusively on positions from real games, ranging from junior events to grandmaster encounters, Nunn ensures that the mates featured are those which arise most often in real life. He also highlights themes and ideas that are often missed in practice. While solving these puzzles, your all-important 'mental library' of patterns will grow, leading to an immediate increase in your playing strength.

All 1001 puzzle positions have been carefully checked, and are graded by theme and difficulty. Points are awarded for finding the checkmate, so you can measure your skill. Most of the puzzles are suitable for novice and junior players. The last chapter challenges you with 'extreme checkmates', but don't worry: you'll be ready for them!

About the Author

Dr John Nunn is one of the best-respected figures in world chess, having numbered among the world's leading grandmasters for nearly twenty years. He has won four gold medals in chess Olympiads, and has three times been crowned World Chess Solving Champion. Nunn's playing style is notoriously aggressive, with sacrifices, king-hunts and checkmates featuring in many of his finest wins.

This book is highly recommended. As you might expect from John Nunn, the material is excellently selected and instructively written. Basically, it is a checkmate puzzle book with exercises ranging from the elementary to the extremely challenging. I can't help feeling that anyone working through this book will improve their chess game.

But the main reason for writing my first ever Amazon review is to explain how brilliantly the book is rendered on the Kindle. If you've read chess puzzle books before you will know that it can be a real pain to keep switching between the puzzle page and the corresponding answer page. In this Kindle version the author has arranged the pagination so that you get a single puzzle on a page, followed by the solution on the following page. As there are over 1000 puzzles, this wouldn't really be possible in a paper publication but it works excellently on the Kindle. The diagrams are very clear so it is all easy on the eye.

I do hope that the author publishes his other books on the Kindle.

Check this out Mate! 9 April 2012

After reading this book, I found that it was certainly worth buying as it really helps players to understand the overlooked art of the checkmate. Add this book to your repertoire and get those extra points! Also try Chess:The Endgame and/or Chess Essentials both by Paul Wiseman.

A high quality collection of puzzles, as you'd expect from John Nunn. Gambit Publications have tailored it for the Kindle by putting the solutions on the following page along with a reminder diagram. A simple change that makes it very convenient to use.
