I can see what Lonely Planet are trying to achieve with this guide but unfortunately I don't think they manage too successfully to pull it off.

This guide tries to offer ideas to the traveller who would "like to see this building" or would "like to see that natural phenomenon". The guide is broken down into sections which contain a theme. A couple of examples being - Most Impressive Waterfalls, Most Visionary Architects and Their Works and Most Bizarre Monuments, and there are many more themes within. As you can see from the titles this is not your normal travel guidebook. What this attempts to do is give you ideas (quirky and the norm) of places to visit and if you have all ready booked to fly somewhere places to see in that area.

You get a short description (3 - 5 sentences or so) on the place or the building or the natural phenomenon, so that you have an idea of what you will see and the background behind it. However where this guide fails is that visually there are not enough images to inspire. Lonely Planet produce excellent travel guides, you get lots of factual information and they are known for this (you don't get lots of photos in their guides) in fact you don't expect lots of images from them. However, this type of book needs images to make the reader think "oh I'd like to go there". You also don't get that much information on the places (scanty in places).

I also found it to be quite disjointed and if you are looking for sites to see in a certain place this book doesn't really work that well. If however you are looking for something to pick up and flick through, this might be the guide to inspire you.

I love the idea behind this book - 1000 amazing sights all over the world for you to plan and see one day. The book is split into 100 small chapters, each of which lists ten sights, usually across two double page spreads. Each sight has a paragraph of information on it to whet your appetite. The chapters range from the expected (Greatest Roman Sites, Most Awesome Canyons and Gorges, Most Amazing Cathedrals and Churches, etc), to the charming or whimsical (Best Sunrises and Sunsets, Most Fairytale-like European Castles, Most Surreal Ghost Towns, Sights from British Childhood Literature), to the decidedly unexpected (`Most Interesting Subway Stations', `Ugliest Beasts', `Strangest Optical Illusions and Mirages'). There are a few that I feel could probably have been left out, such as `Best Public Murals', but the good thing about this book is that there is something for everyone - whilst I prefer awe-inspiring natural sights, someone else will prefer plants, someone else will prefer buildings, another will like statues or art, and another will like animals. All are well catered for here.

However, I do feel there is a major problem with this book, in that there are not many photos. There is generally one photo per double page spread, which equates to one sight in five having a picture. I really think that every sight should at least have a very small picture as otherwise I admit I am not inclined to look all of them up individually and see whether or not they appeal to me. I think the point of having a book about awesome sights should surely be to show you a little of that sight so you can marvel at it, or decide you want to see it in real life. This book would have got five stars if it had been a larger coffee-table style book with pictures of each sight, or at least more of the sites, and I would be raving about it. As it is, it's a little disappointing and frustrating.

I don't know why I keep ordering these - is there some medical term for people that never learn a lesson where averagely-written travel guides are concerned? It's not that I think the Lonely Planet publications are poorly written per se - it's just that these 100/1000/1000000 things/places/sights/experiences/whatever volumes really don't seem to be their forte. Why? Too many entries with really scant info on each attraction, so there's absolutely no way you could actually plan a trip using this publication. And given that, on average, only one in five of the destinations featured has an accompanying picture, the guide can't shoehorn itself into the 'inspirational' or 'coffee table' catagories either.

To be fair they've tried hard to come up with some original sights that won't be found in many other guidebooks (Rost Reef in Norway, Willow Tea Rooms in Glasgow and Deception Island in Antarctica), but there are loads of really obvious ones too (Sydney Harbour, Stonehenge and Graceland, Memphis, USA). I did like the sections featuring 'Ghost Towns' and 'Most Interesting Subway Stations', but other clever chapter titles are a bit of a con - can you explain how anyone can guarantee to see St Elmo's fire or the Polar Lights in the 'Strangest Optical Illusions' section? Likewise, much as I appreciate the kitsch inclusion of Bollywood posters as a sight worth seeing, citing a gallery they can be viewed at would have been much more helpful than the cop-out generalisation of 'Mumbai'. Oh, and the index is rubbish too.

I really wanted to like this book - really and truly I did. But it falls short in so many ways. 3 stars because of the clever oragnisation and theming of the book, 2 off because I wanted more pics and information on each destination.
