More About the Author

Fiona graduated from Exeter University with a B.Ed. (Hons.), specialising in Psychology and Art and Design. After university she worked as a researcher and writer for a company which published educational material for places where children went on school visits (zoos, museums, stately homes etc). Fiona then taught seven, eight and nine year olds for five years; three years at a state school in Sevenoaks in Kent, and two years at The British School in the Netherlands in The Hague.

Fiona joined Usborne Publishing as an assistant editor in 1989, and over the years has been promoted to editor, senior editor, and then managing editor. In 2003, she became an editorial director at Usborne, largely responsible for writing baby and novelty books, and art and activity titles.

Fiona has written over 100 titles for Usborne Publishing including the phenomenally successful 'That's not my...' touchy-feely series. Other titles include large touchy-feely books on topics ranging from princesses to farms; cloth books with touchy-feely patches and flaps; a wide range of step-by-step art and activity books, including 'How to knit'; music books with CDs for babies and toddlers; 'Dolly Dressing' sticker books; Hide-and-Seek lift-the-flap books; bath books; cookery books and snap cards!

She also edits books written by her team of in-house writer/editors, which include step-by-step activity books and a series of young non-fiction, aimed at beginner readers.

I'm going to start by saying this is a really good art and crafts book especially for older children (maybe seven or eight +, but teenagers and adults can get a lot from it as well if they want inspiration for creative ideas).

There's a mixture of things to make and ideas for drawing pictures - some of the models will be suitable for younger children with supervision.

The drawing ideas are presented as double page scenes, and although it gives tips on how to draw certain things in a scene (such as a rabbit in a hilly countryside scene), if you're not naturally good at drawing then your results will be disappointing compared with the scenes in the book (a child that can draw well will get more from the book than an adult who can't draw well - i.e. me!)

To get to the misleading title; there are not a thousand activities in this book, closer to 200 or 300 I don't know exactly how many - typically each idea is spread across two pages and there will be bubbles across the page each with one of the numbers from 1-1000, but a lot of these are minor variations on that pages theme. For instance number 473 is making a collage robot and there's a step by step guide, then number 474 is make a robot with square eyes instead of round eyes - it's not very different is it?

I don't want to put anyone off this book, just stop anyone from being disappointed when they order it.

I bought this book in an actual bookshop (remember those?) and looked through it before buying it, saw that there weren't 1000 activities and bought it anyway - because it's absolutely packed with creative ideas most of which can be done without buying loads of specialist material - most things can be done with paper, card, pens and pencils.

I love this book. It has masses of inspiring ideas for things you can draw, paint, stick etc which small children will love. The ideas are fresh and up to date and there are plenty of things which will appeal to both boys and girls. What a shame the previous reviewer rated it so badly just because it wasn't what she was expecting.

I bought this (and other similarly titled Usborne books) in the hope of finding things to do with my 3-year old son during the school summer holiday. First of all, do not buy other Usborne titles alongside this one - this is essentially an amalgam of all the others. However, my main gripe with this book is that it does not, in fact, contain any projects that you and a child can do together. All the projects require a fairly high level of skill at drawing and other craft activity, and none involve shared tasks - basically, your child can watch you make things, and/or admire them afterwards, but there seemed to me to be little scope for a parent and child to enjoy making things together. Additionally, you won't get much enjoyment from this book if you don't already have the skills to complete craft projects. If you are un-fazed by instructions like, "first, draw a seahorse," then you might enjoy many of the projects in this book. For projects that you can do together with a small child, look elsewhere.

My children and I love this book. It has kept them busy for hours drawing and painting. The vast majority of things in it are 2D drawings etc with only a few 3D ideas for making models. that hasn't seemed to bother my kids and actually makes it easier for them to get on and try out things on their own without needing my help all the time. They've produced some great pieces of art that they've been extremely proud of. I'd definitely recommend it but buy a different book if you want ideas for junk modelling.

I'm not particularly arty and struggle to think of inspiring craft projects for my 4 and 2 year old. This book is an absolute godsend. At the moment we tend to use it to inspire drawings but I think as the children get older we will undertake more of the projects as they are shown in the book - so I think it will be a useful book for about ten years! We were bought the book as a gift and have started sending it to others as a gift because we love it so much!

Great variety of ideas, not too many materials needed. As a primary school teacher I have based a large number of art lessons on this book.
