5.0 out of 5 stars This is the photo album we should cherish for the 21st cent., 2 Jan 2001

This review is from: 1000 Families (Specials) (Paperback)
Fifty years ago, Edward Steichen put together an exhibit and book called The Family of Man. Now, Uwe Ommer has given us a panorama of families across the time zones, religions, cultures, and continents of the world. We can certainly see differences in detail, but we immediately recognize that these are all families. We see that we are one species, there is one human race, and our closest relationships are immensely precious. That's the power of this book. It is dense with intimacy. My main complaint is that so many of the pictures look like contact prints, too small to savor. But there are plenty of full-page plates and the overwhelming impression is that maybe we are all related, we are all indeed part of each other's family.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1000 FAMILIES, 17 Jan 2001

This review is from: 1000 Families (Specials) (Paperback)
Photographer Uwe Ommer shares with us his newly completed four-year project, a "Family Album of Planet Earth." Overwhelming in its magnitude, this project is truly extraordinary. Stopping in over 150 countries in all corners of the world, Ommer carefully selected the families which best reflected each society's traditions and social conditions. Many of the portraits have appeared in exhibitions and magazines during the course of the project; now that the work is finished, TASCHEN brings it all to you in one volume. Ommer chose to photograph each family in the same way, against a white background and with identical lighting. All of the traditional elements of a documentary photograph are removed, leaving only the people themselves. The result is astonishing.

4.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!! 1000.... really?, 23 Oct 2001

YES... really!!

This book shows pictures taken over 4 years in almost every country in the world. To be honest, I didn't even know some of the countries!!!

It is a great book just look at for hours and hours, especially if you like to really look at and examine photographs, the pictures are incredible, and I loved the way each culture is portrayed.... the customes, accesories , sitting arrangement, and family size.

It is printed on a very nice paper, and the book is a nice large but portable size, and it even has comments on some of the families, what they do for a living, where Uwe met them, or why he chose them, etc...

My only complain is that loads of pictures are way too small to be admired, so I ended up skipping many pages because of this.

Otherwise it is a really nice book and will make an excellent present.
