I sat down and started listening to this work, having heard discussions on some late night arts programme on the radio, and wishing fantically I could have seen the staged version. Whether or not this does it justice is hard to say, still after all this time not having seen it, but after having been captivated by the initial tracks, which are clearly designed to hook an audience in from the get-go, I found I was quite entertained by the prospects this music offered me. An unusual mix of classical and not so classical instrumentation leads one to believe that this could appeal quite nicely to the "ambient" music loving generation. If that doesn't satisfy, think of the science fiction theme, the classical styling, and other hinted references which make this piece one of the more crossover style works Glass has ever produced.

I was lucky enough to see the stage version of this production at Sadlers Wells many years ago. I was blown away and having lost my precious copy of this album, Im delighted to be able to add it to my collection again.

Glass is an acquired taste - but once you get into him, you'll appreciate the combination of classical influence over electronic wizardry!

The ability of Philip Glass in making us fly consists in allowing us to associate memories to musical themes like in the process of constantly losing ground beneath our feet. The striking dissonance of its pieces constitutes an intriguing music. The work of the listener becomes reflexive and continuous. One can hardly remember however the seductive structure and needs to repeatedly go back to listening what remains unquantifiable. Many hours of pleasure are ensured by the undefinable life of such melodies.

By Gregory W. May - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
While this CD get's no press, I think it is another great work from Philip Glass. I find it to be a fast moving high-energy work. To give perspective some of my other favorite Philip Glass CD's are : Song's from Liquid Day's, Photographer, Hydrogen Jukebox, Kundun, Glassworks and Einstein on the Beach. If you like Philip Glass, you will like this CD.

1000 Airplanes: A Spacy Opera 23 Nov. 2003
By Hugh Hancock - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I wasn't sure what to think of this album after listening to it a couple of times. I found myself enamored with Track 10, however, a very fast, powerful, maddening tune, and felt the need to go back and re-evaluate the entire album. I found that the album is quick, very thematic, thought-provoking. In fact, I didn't know anything about the theme of the album, but as I listened, I felt I was on the brink of insanity. As it happens, a friend of mine mentioned that the opera is just that--about someone who is a bit whacked. This album is a top five of mine. It's a bit spacy, edgy, crazy. Linda Ronstadt's out-of-this-world vocals are awesome. If you like Philip Glass, you'll love this album!

Great fun! 19 Mar. 2007
By John Gray Hunter Jr. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is incidental music to a play, so it's all wordless [the voice of Linda Ronstadt being used as an instrument] and contained. It's Glass' take on a classic sci-fi score...his version of the original Star Trek theme. [that's why the electric keyboard sound...which is not "cheesy" but essential to the scale and mood of the piece] Sometimes dreamy, sometime frantic, it is full of invention and mood.

Great for driving!!

1000 Airplanes is Wonderful 10 July 2000
By Joshua Smith - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
"1000 Airplanes on the Roof" is wonderful. I bought it because I'm a huge Linda Ronstadt fan but now I have immense respect for Philip Glass as well. His composition here is brilliant. Linda's singing is brilliant. Glass and Ronstadt fans shouldn't be disappointed.

Both Fun and Deep 17 April 2013
By iraWrites - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This piece is both spiritual and fun, moving back and forth from the litany-like patterns typical of Glass's music and an openly fantastic landscape replete with wonder. A journey best heard loud. Excellent.
