4.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive and academic study., 28 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Having war studies inflicted upon you by the Army may seem like some cruel and unusual punishment. This book is written by the majority of the punishers at the British military academy and Staff college.

Curious it is then that I have enjoyed it. The text is gripping - even the theory and the less engaging military campaigns hold the attention. The photographs are mostly from archives that are only available through military sources and so unlike most similar books it contains few sensational press photographs.

Within the study there is less inclination to espouse certain commonly held military beliefs. Portrayed is the finese of Soviet operational art and the relatively unheard critisim of the German victory in France 1940.

Dissapointing is the limited coverage of conflicts in the modern era such as the Falklands War and the various US involvements in Panama, Grenada and Somalia.

Overall as a pressed-man and less than gifted student I found it helpful, informative and particularly where the military world is jargon mad (in the area of Operational planning, Administration and Logistics) easy to read and digest.

Thanks lads - if your reading your own reviews. Tut Tut
