I like this book and the information and historical stuff. The walks are varied and worthwhile and although the maps seemed a bit awkward at first you do get used to them.

Having exhausted the excellent Northumberland, the Borders and Hadrian's Wall: Walks (Pathfinder Guide) I thought I would give this one a try. The map at the start of the guide locates all the walks for you and given that there are 100 walks in this guide there is no shortage of variety or distance.
There are a few issues with this book though. As another reviewer has suggested, it is difficult at first to adjust to the sketch map and written descriptions of the walk. On a few of the walks I have needed to look at the OS map to find a few recognisable features to orientate myself. Indeed, the introduction suggests that you carry a local OS map with you on your walk, which would be fine in a small county, but is an expensive ask given the wide geographic spread of the county and the walks. Another issue is that though the walks get longer in length as you go through the book there is no corresponding indicator of difficulty, which you get with the Pathfinder guides.
Overall, a decent, though not perfect walking guide. Whilst the sketch maps let it down the variety and number of walks more than make up for this.

We have not used this book at the time of writing the review - going on holiday in a couple of months time. The book is a compilation, put together by an editor rather than a single author. My biggest disappointment so far is that the book does not contain 100 different walks - this is very quickly discovered - walks 2 and 3 are the same route! And there are other instances of duplicates also. So I am marking the book down for dishonesty - I would be happier with a book of 90 walks if they were all unique.
However, the real test of quality for a book of this type is how easy it is to follow the instructions: this will have to wait until our holiday. We are going to Wooler, towards the north end of the National Park, and I was pleased to see that the book holds a fair selection of walks in that area.
