Product Description

Product Description

Tired of relying on a man to deal with your home repair problems? This book covers all that you need to know for home improvement and repair. This practical, easy-to-follow and unpatronizing guide takes you step-by-step through the difficult jobs, and offers careful advice to troubleshoot all the problems you are likely to encounter. Anyone can fit a plug, change a washer, hang a picture or unblock a toilet - it's just a matter of knowing how. Alison Jenkins guides readers gently from real beginner skills (changing a fuse) to middle-range competence (tiling a floor). Step-by-step instructions, clearly illustrated, demonstrate the more difficult techniques, while careful advice covers what might go wrong - and how to fix it if it does. Finally, the author explains when not to do it yourself: when to call in the experts, how to talk their language, negotiating a fair rate for a good job, and when to pay. Subjects covered include: getting a basic toolkit together; odd jobs around the home; laying flooring, basic construction, including putting up pictures and shelves; creating storage space; and painting and wallpapering. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative, useful and funny!, 12 Nov 2001
This book is a must for anyone attempting DIY for the first time. It covers everything from what tools to buy to how to use them, changing a plug to changing the colour of your walls, laying the floor to faking it! It details basic repairs like fixing a door and replacing a pane of glass, installation of a washing machine (but not how to fix my broken washing machine, but at least I can plumb the new one in if I can't fix this one!) and then goes on to 'cosmetic' stuff like laying carpet and wood flooring, tiling, painting and wallpapering. It also has a brilliant guide to assembling flat-pack furniture! The descriptions assume that you know nothing but not that you are stupid. And the text is illustrated with some great pictures and funny one-liners!
The last chapter also covers what NOT to attempt yourself and how to get the best from a workman. All in all a brilliantly written guide to doing it myself, I can't wait to get to B&Q!

5.0 out of 5 stars the best book EVER!, 6 Jun 2002
By A Customer
Is this the best book ever? YES!!!

I am hopeless at DIY - I've lived with a sticking door and a dripping tapfor 2 years cos I have no idea what to do - or should I say had no idea - now the sticky door and drippy tap are no more and boy do I feel proud of myself.

I now own a drill and am planning to do lots of home 'improvements' in my new house - like making bookshelves and a new funky bath panel

Buy this book, it's fantastic

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb in every way, 19 Dec 2010
Just imagine a book that is readable, entertaining, funny and practical. Wouldn't you rush to the shops (or the mouse) to buy one? This is a very clear DIY book for BOTH women AND men! Lots of good hints for me and I'm a professional (male) painter and decorator. This is a great present for any woman wanting to learn a few DIY skills, it's very well put together and a good read. Totally recommended.
