Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Contained in five CDs in card sleeves, from the instantly recognisable "Ride of the Valkyries" to less familiar titles which once heard will still strike chords, 100 Popular Classics delivers exactly what it promises on the box. Everything here is tuneful and accessible, the selections concentrating upon such composers as Beethoven, Mozart, Puccini and Tchaikovsky. Other than that, disc 3 explores the 20th century with works such as Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings and Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, the music isn't sequenced to any particular plan. Indeed, with a Chopin piano prelude following Verdi's "Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves" and Grieg's Norwegian Dance no. 2 leading to an extract from Bach's double violin concerto, if ever a set of CDs was made to go in a multi-changer player, this is it. The selections themselves vary from older recordings with leading orchestras, to newer recordings with lesser known, often East-European ensembles. There is no information about the music itself, but setting these discs on random play offers much the same experience as listening to Classic FM, but without all the chat, commercials and news bulletins. And if this leaves you longing for more, try 100 Popular Classics Volume 2. --Gary S Dalkin

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb value for money, 28 Mar 2002
This review is from: 100 Popular Classics (Audio CD)
This CD threw a blanket over many of the Classics I had identified to add to my collection and also introduced me to many more. If you are new to classical music - it is ideal for sampling a wide variety of artists: it provides over 6 hours of pleasure - where else could you get that for the price! Superb!

5.0 out of 5 stars WELL WORTH THE MONEY, 21 Jun 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: 100 Popular Classics (Audio CD)
Don't let the fact that this appears to be a 'budget' set deter you- I've never heard of most of these orchestras either, but the quality of musicianship on these CDs is very high. The selection is also good, with the most euphonic works by the most popular composers all included, and even a couple of lesser-known gems. Perhaps a little Paganini or Jenkins' 'Palladio' would have made it even better, but otherwise, this is an outstanding box set at a VERY reasonable price. It should be highly recommended to both newcomers to the genre and seasoned classical-lovers alike.

I do not normally listen to classical music but I have to say the selection of tracks on this cd would pursuade anyone to listen to this type of music more often. The word popular is the key here. This cd is really for the philistines that are as of yet uninitiated with classical music. So if you are new to this it's got all the catchy numbers which are sure to insentivise you to delve more deeply into the classical genre of music.
