5.0 out of 5 stars Out of this world! 19 Sept. 2010
As a photo manipulation enthusiast, I love Steve Caplin's How to Cheat in Photoshop - this, however, is a whole new dimension. I am very kack handed at drawing, but spent today buried in the book creating an ipod and a flying saucer from scratch - and both have come out looking sleek and gorgeous (not at all like my usual k-rap)!

The book is beautifully laid out, as are all of his, every step accompanied by colour pictures and instructions. It presumes some photoshop knowledge, but the basic principles are very well explained at the start and it is thoroughly cross referenced for those who prefer to dive in to random chapters. Working through the book will give a wealth of knowledge about how to use all the photoshop tools to create light and shade and texture, and it is quite extraordinary to see a flat area of grey, with a few tweaks, coming alive before your very eyes.

Cannot recommend this book highly enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book 22 Jun. 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have just purchased this book from Amazon, and it is truly amazing. I am not an expert, just use photoshop as part of my hobby. The book is well written, easy to understand, and such fun. I found it reviewed in one of the digital camera magazines. Having used it for just one morning I am surprised how much I have learned. Its not your ordinary "how to" photoshop book, everything you create, you create using all of the tools of photoshop, so you dont need photos etc etc. I also found Amazon was the most reasonably priced. I am hoping this will bring out the artist in me! Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing! 10 Oct. 2010
By nic
I have just bought this book from amazon and it is AMAZING!!! Every single thing is the book is drawn from scratch with absolutely no photos. I only have basic knowledge of photoshop but I found it surprising easy to recreate the items in the book, following the clear simple instructions and pictures. This book is well laid out with plenty of pictures. I cannot recommend this book highly enough, possibly one of the best photoshop books I have bought so far...simply amazing!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent but not for beginners 19 July 2010
By Daphne
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have just completed the first scene in this book. It has probably taken me about 10 hours to complete. I would describe myself as an advanced beginner in that I know most of the tools but not all the variations, filters or effects available in Photoshop.

The book does take you through step by step but isn't always explicit about things, you have to investigate and use your own judgement to achieve a congruent scene.

That said I have found this book to be much more compelling than Steve Caplin's other (still very good ) books as there is a real feeling of accomplishment when completing the scene and you really feel like you are really starting to cook with photoshop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking 24 Jan. 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As one who cannot sketch even a decent matchstick man, I was a little skeptical about buying this book. I know Steve Caplin's other photoshop books, so that helped to tip the book into my basket. I'm am not one bit disappointed. I am already learning so much more from Steve, and I feel like I can draw! First you will be taken through the essentials (layers, selections, textures, filters), then it's right into the projects. The projects themselves are great fun, and very informative. You will actually impress yourself as you make your way through. If like me you use photoshop regularly, and feel there's that little gray area you avoid, this is for you. A cracking book! Thank you Steve Caplin.

5.0 out of 5 stars This one delivers! 17 April 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Before this book I could only edit existing images. After this book, i can create new images starting from white canvas. If you can invest the time to learn to use photoshop, this book helps greatly in guiding the effort to right direction.

Steve Caplin knows what he is talking about and can explain it clearly. All of his PhotoShop books are excellent. With excercises and step by step instruction that are clear and concise.
Realy makes it easy, after working through an example you just sit there and think "did I do that!"
