Product Description

Product Description

Philip Brophy's bfi Screen Guide provides a soundmap to a hundred films that engage the ears. Covering titles as diverse as Car Wash and Apocalypse Now, Le Samourai and Stalker, Shaft and Citizen Kane each entry outlines the film's distinctive contribution to the hitherto underexplored world of sound in cinema.
The author guides the reader through an alternative cinema canon of the 'ear' of sonically exciting and remarkablefilms from all across the world and their amazing diversity of purpose and effect. This guide shows how most critics completly underestimate the significance of sound and how it is caught between the two irrreconcilable forces of the 'sound track'and sound design.
In his introduction and analysis (or more accurately 'hearing) of 100 films, the author compels the reader to 'listen not look' and to 'think with their ears'. 100 Film Scores and Sound Design is a provocative and absorbing guide to some of the most exciting uses of sound in popular and international cinema.

Format:Paperback
Another of the generally excellent BFI screen guides, covering the much undervalued world of Film Sound. Brophy has collected an astonishingly wide range of examples from the whole spectrum of film, from World Cinema, Hollywood, Avant-Garde, Animation, Blockbuster even Soft Porn! It's an extremely academic book (see the comparison between Looney Toons cartoons and "aural pornography") but if you can keep up it's extremely illuminating. Having said that it's a shame so many of the films are unavailable to view on Video/DVD. Brophy could do with toning down his style a little, to make the undeniably excellent insights more accessible

i hoped this would be another valuable pocket size guide book like the one on american indie cinema but despite intriguing choices and obvious knowledge its far too professorial and pretentious in tone. a shame as this could have been another accessible, but still knowledgeable book to add to others in the series, but instead its just stuffy, full of academic, hifaultin jargon and often seems to get too bogged down in the authors dense and lofty flights of fancy. fine for a dissertation to impress your film lecturer (or head of department - the author already is a lecturer apparently), but of little use to anyone who wants to actually comprehend what is on the page - the entries often read as if the writer has no clue how to communicate his thoughts, or as though he is better at coming up with new hybrid descriptions than actually getting to the heart of how these soundtracks work with the images. not nearly as essential as it could have been.

too stuffy 21 July 2009
Format:Paperback
This is the third in the series that i have bought (after 100 european horrors and 100 american independent films). Unfortunately whereas those two are extremely readable and useful, this 100 soundtracks book doesn't live up to them. There a two main problems:
first the style, as mentioned in the other review is much too stuffy and needlessly academic in tone. It seems the author is showing off his knowledge rather than writing a good guide on the subject.
secondly, whereas the other two books refer to certain 'genres' and as such are much more cohesive, the soundtrack book has such a disparate choice of films that its easy to lose interest as it jumps from film to film with little to connect them.

Its interesting enough, and the majority of the films make for good discussion/insight into their sound design, but the other books are far better.
