I don't follow current trends, but as far as I know, Devotchka don't make the charts or have a particularly high profile. People I speak to have never heard of them and it's only when you mention that they provided the soundtrack to Little Miss Sunshine that they nod, scratch and trawl through their memory banks for something to latch onto.
With there being so much crap on the market, I see it as a privilege to have been properly exposed to this outstanding band, who consistently provide music that is original, well crafted and an absolute joy to listen to. If only there were more like them (and Arcade Fire of course, who are equally excellent).
As soon as I saw the new CD on Amazon I ordered it. Having their previous albums in my collection, I just knew they wouldn't let me down, and they haven't.
100 Lovers is brilliant. Like I said, utterly fab.

I truly wish that I could say more positive things about this album but honesty prevents me from doing so! Having adored A Mad and Faithful Telling and seen moments of wonder on How it Ends and Una Volta, I was full of anticipation over this release. That anticipation was utterly misplaced.
The production values are certainly high and much of the instrumentation continues to plough the same furrows as previous efforts, attempting (seemingly at every turn) to generate grand canvas musical atmospherics. Disappointingly, Nick Urata's vocals often meander throughout most of the tracks lending neither release nor impetus to the songs. Lyrically, there is also little to get in a tizz about, not that this was ever their strongest point in the first place. The most startling difference with previous albums is the sheer absence of diversity here. All the manic creativity of Faithful Telling is completely lost in Devotvchka's vain attempts to tap into the musical mainstream.
In saying all this, there are still highlights. Opening track The Alley is a beautifully slow-burning introduction whilst 100 Other Lovers provides a glimpse of past glories. You can certainly while away the hours to this album but whereas in the past, Devotchka have grabbed and kept the listener's attention, on this effort they provide strictly background music.

After the heady heights of "A Mad and Faithful Telling" this comes as something of a disappointment. The (almost) title track "100 Other Lovers" is a gorgeous piece of musical whimsy, as good as anything on the previous album, and you should make a point of searching out the truly fabulous animated video that accompanies it.
But, overall, the sheer variety displayed on the band's last outing is in much shorter supply this time, with certain songs sounding like works-in-progress rather than the finished article.
"Contrabanda" fizzes along nicely and the instrumental "Sunshine" ticks the right boxes but too much of the album sounds like a retread of former glories, dominated by the rise and fall of Nick Urata's idiosyncratic vocal, more often than not leading to an inevitable and predictable crescendo.
It's always all about the songs and sadly, the title track excepted, those are mostly less enthralling than last time out. Hopefully DeVotchKa can regain that elusive spark next time. Two and a half stars.
