2 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Hal Marshall TOP 100 REVIEWER on 13 Feb 2013
Format: Audio CD
This five CD set is a very well put together little window into the tastes (generally good, occasionally bad and sometimes utterly diabolical) of the great British record-buying public from the late fifties right up into the late noughties. What a ridiculous word that is by the way. I'm working on the assumption that these were all British number ones anyway - the design of the cover does seem to indicate more than a nod and a wink towards the Union Flag. With scant details of any kind contained within however, it's difficult to say for certain.

The music progresses through the decades in more or less chronological order. With six decades to cover, it isn't quite as simple as having one disc for each one, but the plus side of that is that there is less space for the likes of Jimmy Young at one end while the years 2000 - 2008 (time didn't stop then, so far as I am aware - that's when the box set was produced) are somewhat under represented. Having listened to A1's remake of the A-Ha classic 'Take On Me' and being left feeling old beyond all comprehension, I am personally rather grateful for that fact.

CD1 - Opens the action with Elvis Presley and 'Jailhouse Rock' and takes a fairly steady route through some absolutely cracking late fifties / sixties / early seventies tracks. 'Love Grows Where My Rosemary Grows' is my own favourite. It was number one for five weeks back in 1970, proof that people had great taste back then - despite the presence on this disc of 'Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep', which might just suggest otherwise.

CD2 - This is the epitome of a seventies collection - it has a little bit of everything. Country, middle of the road, soul... Johnny Logan. He defies description really. As does David Soul, for that matter.
