I have bought several compilation albums of some of the all time great American singers, Sinatra, Martin, Nat King Cole but this was the first in the 100 hits series. Too many of the tracks are not Crosby's best and I had the feeling that any old song was added to reach the magic figure of 100. It remains value for money for the recordings I do like, and there are many. I would not however purchase another 100 best for these reasons.Rather I will stick to the more traditional greatest hits albums which have a better selection of songs.
I wish Amazon would publish the songs on all the greatest hits albums sold- it will improve customer choice.

For years, one of my favourite songs was a Bing Crosby tune - although it's only recently that I've managed to deduce what the name of it is. I recorded it on cassette tape direct from Radio 2 one morning way back in nineteen hundred and ninety something, while serving proudly as one of Sarah Kennedy's 'Dawn Patrollers'. Which I think dates pretty much everybody I have so far mentioned, most especially me. I can't imagine what I was doing up at such an ungodly hour in the first place, but whatever the reason was, by the time I realised 'At The Jazz Band Ball' was awesome beyond mere words, I had completely missed what the tune was called. And then, frustratingly, Bunty Bagshawe didn't mention it again. For years, all I had was that tape. And then, with the inexorable march of technology (combined with that awful habit that tape machines had of wilfully destroying your tapes whenever the malicious mood took them), I didn't even have that. All I had left were my memories.

Why am I waxing lyrical over a Bing Crosby track that isn't even included on this 5CD box-set? Well, how would a person know that song isn't on here, what with there being no track listing of any description? Not that such a thing would have helped me anyway, since it was only when I actually bought this product and played every song on it that I realised the one I most wanted had managed to evade me. Still, this other Bing Crosby stuff is not half bad, especially 'Alexander's Ragtime Band' - I love that tune too!

It was only after I had discovered that Bing was really rather good in general that I finally became inspired to type the lyrics to 'At The Jazz Band Ball' as I remembered them into the internet. Within three seconds, I had my title... and found the song itself on YouTube. Typical!

Bing Crosby is up there alongside the greats, his distinctive singing and his songs will stand the test of time. If you have parted with your money and bought this compilation of his songs then you most definitely havn't wasted your money. Some of the songs I can remember him singing when I was a kid and also growing up and there are some songs in the compilation that I'd never heard before. I enjoyed these records immensely and I would recomend this product to anybody.

I just love this. Made at a timewhen singers sang, and not just warbled in what they hope is a tune! This guy really could sing, in tune in perfect time; and the songs! It is true, they just don't write songs like this any more.
