4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect, but... 15 Mar 2011
By Al
This is a terrific compilation of 99 songs. It would've been 100, but there's a rather huge error. CD 2 Track 9 is Terri Wells version of "I'll Be Around". CD 4 Track 8 is supposed to be the Detroit Spinners original version of this song, but is actually an extended edit of Terri Wells' version (the edit starts at about 2'17" in). (I played Terri Wells on the radio when it was a new release.)

It's nice to have 2 edits, but the original would have been nice.
100 Hits - Disco Classics

Just an addition here to say that the label (Demon) has been in touch and say it was a mistake and they're rectifying the situation. Top service. I'm a huge fan of this series.

I thought I'd found the mother lode. I thought I'd be safe with this. This is a Demon Music issue. Demon Music under the name Harmless has been putting out some good stuff with great picks by Ian Dewhirst, who in my opinion is one the most positive forces in music today.

Granted, The Backbeats series under the label Harmless is not exactly a paradise for sound quality. It's little bit over driven and the high end is a little shrill at times, but still quite OK.

I listened to the samples of this, and by golly I got fooled again. Once again (see my other reviews), the sound quality of this is flat, one dimensional and depthless. Vocals, instruments and effects that should have depth and come forward in the mix remain flat. I have some of these tracks on other labels, and some even from Demon/Harmless labels and, sure enough, the sound of this is seriously flawed, just as I describe. I played many of these cuts back to back with other issues and labels. There is a strange uniformity to the sound as well.

Now, some people might not even notice this. There is enough depth in the mixes between the speakers to give the illusion that nothing is wrong. If you play this on a boom box, IPod or even a PA system on the dance floor, it's pretty sure no one is really going to complain. This strange sound even comes in varying degrees on other CDs. This is not quite as bad as Golden State Funk, Southern Funkin', Stax of Funk or Wheedles Groove. Wheedles groove is not only flat and depthless but the parts what should have depth actually distort out, making it one of the most hideous things I've ever heard in my life.

This set is totally worthless except as a reference disk to sort out the good tracks from the not so good ones.

4.0 out of 5 stars 90 Hits would have been better! 15 May 2011
Why do I say 90 hits would have been better. Let me first of all say this should be a 5 star album. There are loads of brilliant "real" disco classics on this comp that I have never seen on any other!Deodato "Whistle Bump" immense!John Davis "Love Magic" Amazing,KLEEER "Keep your body working" Superb! Zapp "More bounce to the Ounce" OMG!
Mick Jackson's original version of "Blame it on the Boogie" never seen it apart from the original LP.
There are lots like these. The only thing that let's it down is the brutal editing. There are too many that sound like the start of the original 12" and just as you are beginning to get into the track ( at 2 mins 46 secs!!!!) the fader is pulled down with all the finesse of being whacked in the face with a wet fish!! The whole disco era was about "length" The 60's were 2 mins 46 secs not the disco wonderful 70's/80's. So rather than cram 100 tracks in ( cause that's what it says on the tin )
Giving a bit more of less would have made this arguably one of the best comps ever. And bringing volume 2 out would have been worth the wait. Listen there are a couple that go all the way.... but not enough.
That said Well worth the 4 stars!
