At its current (May 2012) price this is a steal. 6 CDs, each of them over 70 minutes long, featuring excerpts from Callas's complete opera recordings. Not all of these are solo arias - you even get the delightful sextet from Lucia - which means you get a good array of other singers, including Cossotto, Corelli, Gobbi, di Stefano, Tucker, Panerai and Gedda. The sound is pretty good, given the age and provenance of the recordings, most of which were made in the fifties, when Callas was (arguably?) at her vocal best.
I am not always in the mood for the Callas voice, it has to be said. When I need something a bit less 'shrill' I listen to Caballé, Kiri, Tebaldi or Ella Fitzgerald. But when I am in the mood, the excitement of this voice is wonderful. She is noted for her acting ability, but it wasn't just body-acting: she acted with her voice as well.
This is an excellent set; I already had quite a few of the items in other collections, but it was well worth the price to get the ones that are new to me.
The packaging isn't brilliant - you need to be careful when closing the box or else you could end up with splintered plastic - and the booklet is only a dozen or so sides long, just giving the track listings and the recording dates. But I certainly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good first Callas set, or to those who want to hear a few samples of her complete opera recordings.
