Book Description

5 Mar 2009

Funny, dark and true, this is the sensational follow-up to the smash hit I DID A BAD THING...

Jo Gilroy, an award-winning TV news reporter, has returned to work part-time at Spotlight North West after a lengthy maternity leave. But, to her dismay, she has been demoted to covering the 'And finally' stories at the end of the news. Even worse, her new boss is her ex-boyfriend Richard, who walked out on her and their son Alfie on his first birthday. Now Richard's going out with the station's celebrity weather girl. As the humiliation piles on, Jo wonders how she can ever trust a man again. But then she meets Dan, an enigmatic balloon sculptor who lives on a canal boat. Her son Alfie is enchanted by him, as is Jo. But Dan is hiding a dark secret about his childhood. And can Jo really risk another unhappy ending? Find out in Linda Green's hilarious and moving new novel...

4.0 out of 5 stars Genuinely enjoyable read 17 Feb 2009
Format:Hardcover
I enjoyed Linda's first novel - but have to say I enjoyed this one far more. What a thoroughly enjoyable read. One of the fastest I've read - not particularly in terms of its page-turning attributes, but because it flows so well. I particularly enjoyed the flashbacks to Dan's childhood, set in the 1970s and 1980s, because I grew up in the same era. Who can forget the Charles and Diana wedding street parties? But you get drawn into Dan's world without realising how attached you become to him and the trauma that he has to cope with. Those sections were thoroughly riveting and shocking - I really did not expect what happens to happen (without spoiling it for others). A genuinely enjoyable read. The only thing I was not sure about was the title - but as it doesn't particularly figure in the story - who cares. Would recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read 17 April 2009
By S. Hall
Format:Paperback
I have just finished reading this book, and felt compelled to write a review. As other reviewers have said, the title of the book doesn't do the book justice, and the depth of the book was an unexpected and pleasant surprise.

You get completely drawn into Jo and Dan's lives, the chapters where you read about Dan's childhood are shocking and emotional, and the one thing that struck me, was how accurately the writer could describe how a 6 year old would think and talk.

The writer is very witty and her sense of humour made me laugh out loud many times. The journey that Jo, her son Alfie, and Dan go through, will have you enthralled to the very end.

I would recommend this book to anyone, and I can't wait for her next book. By far this is the best book I have read in a long time, and I read a lot! I just could not put this book down.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read 5 April 2009
By Mrs K
Format:Paperback
Really enjoyed the flashback scenes and thought that was the strongest writing as it built up a sense of impending disaster. I would say that the book has much more depth than its twirly girly cover would lead you to think.
