10 Items Or Less is a real find. To call it a film would be mildly incorrect- it's more of a lesson about how beautiful and surprising life can be when you put a smile on your face and open both of your eyes. Director Brad Silberling manages to squeeze more joy, laughs and genuine emotion into 70 minutes than Hollywood could ever dream of.
Shot on location in the empty outskirts of California, the film has a warm, grainy, summery look... Which you soon realize is the perfect setting for the proceedings- as a kind, tired old movie-star runs into a no-nonsense young checkout girl while researching for his next film.
The friendship created between old movie-star and young checkout girl is stunningly realized. Morgan Freeman and Paz Vega play the two leads in what could have been your average 'buddy movie', but thanks to some flawless acting, a great script and sweetly simplistic directing, 10 Items Or Less turns out to be one of the most heart-warming and surprising pleasures of the year.
After watching, you'll start to see things in a whole new light, and hopefully realize that however rubbish you think life may be, happiness is just around the corner.
