3.0 out of 5 stars The words are better than the pictures 22 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book to help with an illustration project I am working on. The book features a flip over concept that enables the reader to create thousands of different zombie designs. I love these sort of concepts and have a few other books of this type. However, upon viewing the contents I found the illustrations to be quite stale and repetitive in style. I put this down to the fact that the images were produced digitally. While i have no general dislike for digitally produced art I do find the style in this book fits in more with character concept design rather than fully renedered finished pieces. This book would have been a bit of a dissappointment if it wasnt for the other feature of this book and that is that by turning the flaps you also create a different story of zombie based horror written by Alex Cox. These are imaginitive stories which I wished went on for longer.
Overall I would give the artwork 2 stars and the writing 4 giving a nice average of 3.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeously Grotesque 1 Oct 2011
By HeavyMetalMonty VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This little book will appeal to all zombie aficionados. Each left-hand page contains a story by Alexander Hartman, while the right-hand pages feature the gorgeously grotesque artwork of award-winning illustrator David Hartman. Appropriately - as the subject matter is zombies - the book's pages are hacked into three parts: top left, beginning of story; middle left, middle of story; bottom left, end of story; top right, zombie head; middle right, zombie torso; bottom right, zombie legs. These hacked-up interchangeable sections give the reader the ability to create over 10,000 short stories and 10,000 zombies. Some fun is to be had creating zombies (such as my personal favourite: axe-split head, buxom serving-wench torso, sea-pirate legs). The novelty quickly wears off, though.

All in all, an innovative and creative little book, but one which won't win any literary awards and - in all but the most ardent zombie-art enthusiast - will lose its flavour rapidly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quick Reviews! 15 Mar 2012
By carlosnightman VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I was hoping for a lot more from this- more coherant stories for example, but given that there are thousands of different ways to open and close your tale, as well as all the good stuff in the middle, it would be difficult to make any of them coherant. This is just a bunch of easy fun wrapped inside a few thousand rotting corpses. The zombies are impressively detailed and kids will spend hours creating their favourite characters and possibly delving into their own dark imaginations to produce their own fevered stories of blood and chaos. Wisely the illustrations are given a page all of their own so that there is a full page impact, while the stories appear on the other leaf. Each creation is split into three so if you turn the top third of a page you will be decapitating one monster and giving bith to a new one- likewise with the legs and torso. So, obviosuly this isn't the sort of bok you will pick up and read through, it's more of a game, partly like those 'you open the door- turn to page 49' books of my youth.
Parents shouldn't worry that there is anything too graphic or offensive or terrifying here, it's all good clean gruesome fun- the sort which kids lap up. Horror 'maestro' Alex Cox narrates while we get a foreword from undead metal legend Rob Zombie, though chances are that is geared more towards 'adult' zombie fiends rather than the youngsters. It's cheap and worth a look if you're child is showing an interest in the dead side of life.
