Product Description

Difference between the GC8500 series versus its predecessor GC8400 series
Great results, minimum effort--no compromise

Powerful yet convenient, this pressurised steam generator ironing system produces continuous steam at high pressure. The large detachable water tank can be refilled any time and anywhere, making your ironing fast and easy.

Differences between the GC8500 Series and its predecessor the GC8400 Series
There are three main differences:
  • The GC8500 series has an eco steam setting which saves up to 20% energy and 50% water consumption. Most ironing jobs don't require all the power that an iron has, so the eco steam setting is an intelligent, eco-friendly option that gives you the chance to reduce both your carbon footprint and your energy bill.
  • Anti-calc tablets in the water tank to prevent calc from building up in the appliance.
  • Higher continuous steam output (120 g/minute as compared to 110 g/minute).

Philips GC7423 Steam Generator
Ergonomic shape
Continuous steam up to 120 g/minute

This pressurised steam generator provides continuous steam output up to 120 g/minute, thanks to the small amounts of water that are pumped into the boiler each time. In combination with a special vent pattern for optimal steam distribution, this means fast crease removal and great results.

Steam boost up to 200 g/minute

A powerful steam boost up to 200 g/minute helps to easily remove even the most stubborn creases.

Up to 5 Bars Steam Pressure

Ergonomic design

The ergonomic design of this system facilitates comfortable ironing by putting less strain on the wrist. The upwardly sloping handle ensures a natural position and reduces strain. The unique design also prevents the repetitive movements caused by placing an iron on its heel.

Up to five bars steam pressure

Double your ironing speed with pressurised steam. Pressurised steam penetrates deep into fabrics, making your ironing fast and easy, even on difficult fabrics.

Lightweight

This iron is also light (only 1.2 kg) for an effortless and comfortable ironing experience.

SteamGlide soleplate

SteamGlide is Philips' premium soleplate. It features great scratch resistance, excellent gliding and is easy to clean. The coating on the soleplate is ceramic-based, which facilitates easy cleaning of the soleplate and smooth gliding on all types of fabrics.

Calc clean function and anti-calc tablets

The calc clean function removes scale and impurities. Regular calc cleaning is important to keep the iron functioning with an optimal amount of steam, especially if you are filling your iron with hard water from the tap. This iron features permanent anti-calc tablets that delay the formation of scale build-up, ensuring better protection, better performance and a longer life for your steam generator system. It's a good idea to calc clean before heating up the appliance. Do NOT open the calc clean cap when the appliance is hot. If the appliance is hot, unplug the power cord from the mains and let the steam tank cool down for two hours. Remove the calc clean cap by turning it anti-clockwise. Pour water from the steam tank into the sink. Rinse the steam tank with tap water until all impurities are flushed out. Screw the calc clean cap back on tightly by turning it clockwise. A calc clean should be done once a month.

Quick start: Less than two minutes

This steam generator is super-fast to fill and set up and is ready to use in less than two minutes.

Refill the water tank any time

The separate water tank allows you to refill at any time, even during ironing, without waiting.

Full control

Get full control over your ironing with features like the iron temperature ready light and steam ready light (an indicator that shows when the right steam level is reached). On the steam generator's control panel, you will see three green lights for the steam setting which flash when heating up, turned on when the steam is ready. The water tank empty light is the red light that flashes when the water tank is empty and turns off when the water tank is refilled and put back in place.

Automatic cord winder

Thanks to the automatic cord winder, you can just press the button to automatically retract the power cord.

Reaches into tricky areas

The steam tip and button groove lets you iron right into hard-to-reach areas like seams and around buttons.

Eco setting

Save 20% energy and 40% water consumption by selecting the eco setting. This setting offers the most energy efficient way to obtain perfect ironing results.

Easy rinsing

In order to improve the lifetime of your system, we recommend you rinse the inside of your system base. This has been made easily accessible with the easy rinse knob. You don't need any accessories to rinse your system.

Iron resting mat

To improve comfort during ironing, you can place the iron anywhere with the heat-resistant iron resting mat. As you do not need to put the iron on its heel during intervals, you decrease the strain on your wrist. The resting mat is highly heat-resistant, even when a soleplate heated to 250°C is placed on it. Place the iron resting mat on the ironing board during use. Beware that the mat is hot after ironing, so grip it by the flap on the mat to prevent scorching.

A large water tank capacity enables you to iron with steam without having to refill. The tank can hold a large amount of water so you can iron for up to three hours uninterrupted. The water tank is detachable; pull up the release lever on top of the water tank to detach it, and fill the water tank under the tap. You may fill the water tank any time during ironing.

Carry lock: Lock and carry your system effortlessly with one hand

To carry the iron comfortably, wind the mains cord by pressing the cord rewind button, place the iron on the platform on top of the steam generator and wind the steam supply hose round the bottom of the steam generator, making sure it is neatly tucked in the storage groove and behind the storage bracket. Then lock the iron onto the platform by sliding the carry lock slide to the right. When the iron is securely locked, you can carry it by the handle. You may also carry the steam generator by holding it by its bottom. If the water tank is full when you want to store the appliance, you may have to pour out some water to prevent splashing during transportation.

I am really pleased with my Philips GC8560 iron.
I bought it after my sister had recommended steam generator irons after she had bought a Tefal at Christmas. I have Chronic fatigue syndrome and although I don't mind ironing I was finding it a real chore, very tiring standing for an hour or more. We have cotton sheets and duvets and all the shirts my husband wears are cotton so in the winter when they had been in the tumble dryer the job was very daunting. I have found that the Philips iron has cut the time I stand ironing in half and I get a better result with very little effort, no pressing backwards and forwards trying to get stubborn creases out! My old iron used to start to drip after about 50mins of ironing which was really annoying, this doesn't happen with my new one and no constant refilling of the water tank HURRAH!!! On a technical point I find the retractable cord a good feature and the eco button, I do most of my ironing on 'eco' first and then turn it to 'normal' for very thick or very creased items.

    UPDATE!!!
How quickly time flies....3 years on and my iron has died on me :-( The circuit panel has gone and is obsolete so I can't get it repaired. I don't think 3 years life is good enough for an expensive product. Will be wary of buying Philips again.

This is such a great iron, it almost makes ironing fun! I have to admit I am comparing it to an old and cheap iron and it's rather like comparing a shiny new Ferrari with a battered old mini.

There are many advantages to this iron: I can now do the pile of ironing in half the time, especially if I put the iron on the highest steam setting, no more going back over stubborn creases again and again, just whizz over on full steam and they are all gone. Also there is no more need to remember to get things ironed while they are still damp, the sheer amount of steam means even a bone dry shirt can soon be crease free. Because the water tank is large there is no need to stop halfway through to refill, I can easily do all my ironing on one tank. With the separate tank the iron is light to lift and the hose is sufficiently long to be able to move the iron easily over the ironing board with the tank on the table nearby. I find the iron glides smoothly over the clothes and works very efficiently. I was especially impressed by the way I was able to tackle new curtains straight out of the packet and very creased, it looked like a daunting task but with the new iron I soon had the curtains hung and looking good.

I can only think of a few disadvantages: The main one is that I would advise you to keep other people, especially children, well clear when you iron; there is a lot of hot steam. This also means it's not a good idea to wear your glasses when ironing, they'll soon be steamed up! You may need to rethink where you iron to have a handy table for the water tank and I'm now considering buying a new ironing board as the efficiency of the iron is showing up the deficiencies in the surface of my board. If, like me, you like to watch TV when ironing you may need to turn up the volume, the iron can be quite noisy!

All in all, I would recommend this iron; the slight disadvantages are far outweighed by the superior performance and time saving.

I didn't think the replacement Philips iron would be as good as the one I had sadly had to part with. But this is infinitely better. It is really quiet on the medium steam setting (Eco, Medium and High), which is adequate for our laundry. The detachable tank holds more water than my previous model, but is better designed and easier to handle. It slips easily out of the iron for refilling even when it is "caged" in its Brabantia ironing table stand. I had forgotten about the automatic rewind for the plug, which is really tidy.
You might find it annoying if you are used to turning on the steam and just leaving it, because you have to hold the steam button under the handle when you want to steam at the normal rate. I prefer it, as I then have more control, and I found the iron very light. You can't set the iron upright on the table, because it is designed to be hand friendly. They do supply a heat stand to place on the ironing board.

I spent a few weeks reading reviews on the internet before I decided on this particular model, I wanted the cord rewind function which is fantastic, no wire to worry about. Its cut my ironing time by half, jeans are done in no time at all.
I've never had a steam generator iron before so I can't compare it against any other model. The steam trigger is under the handle so if you don't want steam you don't have to use it, but it glides smoother with.
There's this ECO function which I set it to which give sufficient steam for ironing most things and I turn it up for stubborn creases.
Was expensive, best price was on Amazon.

I recently purchased this iron after seeing it on Amazon at virtually half-price,and I am very pleased that I did!

It really makes ironing a breeze, gives excellent results and really cuts down the time spent carrying out that particular chore, compared with a normal steam-iron.

It is very easy to use,but the base/tank is quite bulky (but that does mean it holds a decent amount of water).

I would definitely recommend this product!
